Windows 10 End of Support 10/25

FWIW; I did in-situ upgrades to both my desktop studios without a hitch and they are running smoothly.
I have an unqualified laptop from 2017 (it DOES have TPM) but a CPU not on the list, and used the US English SERVER version install of W11 Home (which, unbeknownst to most) does NOT check for hardware or BIOS compatibility. It too was seamless, barring a few minor tweaks, like losing my wallpaper slide show and lock screen graphic, but after about 4 hours of fiddling, looks and operates just like it was W10.
And while I haven't benchmarked them, they (anecdotally) run slightly faster when launching programs.
I also run OpenMenuShell so that they all still appear to look like W7, cuz I can't stand the 'Metro' UI. Clients are amused when they look over my shoulder.

I just updated two computers in my studio that run Windows 10 to utilize the year of extended updates, and was charged nothing for it. I know that in Europe they're rolling out free updates, so maybe that's happening as well here in the states.

Plenty of relatively easy ways to get Win 11 running on a machine without a TPM chip. I have it running on my Mac Pro 2019, as an example.
Just Google how to do it - there are USB installers which make it pretty simple. There's a single Registry Key you can change, mid-installation, to tell Windows to ignore compatibility checks. Once it's done it's done - I've had loads of standard Win updates since then which have all worked fine with no extra effort.

Nice. Yes - in the EU - you get a year for free. Enjoy.

I just left it a little late, so I I guess I'll have to buy the extension from MS (though it pains me greatly) to give me more time to decide what replacement machines to get, and actually get them, and yes, reinstall everything 🤬

This is my play as well.

In Feb 2024 - when I was building my new DAW - Win 11 23H2 was the flavour of the month - but it was still too unruly for DAW work - so I reverted back to Windows 10 and it has been (as usual) the trusted OS of all things stable.

I realize that it will be time to move - but the ESU gives me that time. I won't be pressured by MS to rebuild a DAW - which now takes an entire (FRI-SAT-SUN) to really do correctly. At least with my very specific custom layout.

I will take my time and move when ready.

I was surprised that I was able to update for free because I'm in Texas. I didn't use MS reward points or anything like that. It just said that I qualified for a free year on both computers.
Whoa - you are in Texas? Do you have Windows Backup activated? Or use an MS account on the machine?

Well, I ended up updating my DAW machine to Windows 11 over Windows 10, and apart from having to faff around with USB ports, and having to update to the latest Focusrite drivers (I had mistakenly assumed I had them already, but you know what they say about assumptions), my (completely disorganised) setup seems to be chugging along as happily as it did under Win10 - guess I'll have to wait and see how thiings go with it, but all is looking good atm.

I wish doing the same for my other non-DAW system would be so painless - sadly, although my machine does in fact meet all requirements to enrol for ESU, the option to actually do the enrolling does not seem to be available (the option/button thingy just does not appear in my Windows Update dialogue) - I saw something about maybe it just hadn't gotten rolled out to my machine yet, although the ESU option did appear on my DAW machine - I get the impression that 'they' are trying to make it as difficult as 'they' possibly can for me (it's beginning to get personal)

And now I see Windows 12 is looming on the horizon - it's never ending :)

I'm in the Pacific Northwest. I also got a free year (until Oct 2026) I do have an MS account. Not sure if that's why I got the free year.

I'm clicking 'buy' on my replacement some time today. I don't like replacing a PC that still runs great -even if it is 8 years old ;) Too bad it won't upgrade to 11.

I will likely convert it to Linux and see how I like that environment.
missed out, and the supplies ran out. shopping again

I'll happily stay on Win 10 for a good while yet, just like I did with Win 7 (and XP...). I'll probably be replacing my main PC in a year or so and that will be when I jump to Win 11.

@Davey If you plan to stay on Windows 10 for another year, you should at least try to get the Extended Security Updates (ESU) from Microsoft. The only thing you have to do is to link your Windows user account with a Microsoft account.
To enroll your PC in ESU, you could run a script which is available here:

Yeah, I know what you are saying but I'm just not that bothered. Most of the end of life thing is a marketing exercise to push us onto the new OS. My main music PC runs lean and mean. No email, social media or web browsing. No dodgy software. The only online usage is to activate plugins and keep them activated and to update things like S1. So the risks are very low and I have good backups. I'm pretty sure most hacks come from web pages, pirated software and dubious email links rather than obscure security holes in the OS.

I'll report back when these words some back to bite me! 😊

Incidentally, there was a really interesting Beeb article recently about how these corporate cyber attacks work. Rather than some elite team of genius hackers seeking to exploit tiny defects in the OS code they basically just find an employee to bribe. The sums of money are so large that they can offer mortgage-sized bribes to anyone who has sufficient access to an IT system. With a login and a password they can do what they want.

I went ahead and signed up for the extra year of security updates. Plenty of time to find the right machine at the right price.

There's a rumour that Windows 10 will be extended past the "final year of security updates". Several governments are pressuring M$ to extend the life of the OS.

Heard that one about 16 times already.

Governments can easily afford the "business" ESU program - which offers 3 years of extended updates.

Suggest they get on it because this is happening as of Oct 14 and will end on Oct 14, 2028.

The "gift" option for 1 more year of security updates is working in the US. It is offered when you backup your Windows settings to OneDrive. I just got it for a VM.

Thing is, I never set that Windows install to backup anywhere, nor did I connect it to OneDrive...

Activated this on two systems so far here in Canada too (based on a YT creator I follow) - no charge and good to go on both to Oct 2026

Two more to go this weekend.

All four Windows 10 stations here are now good to Oct 2026. Very easy to do and it appears - no charge now either.
