Windows 10 End of Support 10/25

If it was me - and I was going to move off Win 10 - and over to Win11 - it would be via clean install.

Installing one OS over the other - might work for a run of the mill "surf n email" machine - but a DAW is several levels beyond - especially with drivers etc. Not all Win 10 drivers will work flawlessly (or at all) on Win 11.

You would have a new appreciation for "sense of dread" if you tried an in-place upgrade and the thing failed 67% of the way through.

Not a chance I would take. Like ever.

Yet another good point, and I'll chime in here as well;

I have done the upgrade entire OS in place and it came off quite well with every app functioning:

If you attempt this I recommend doing so by imaging the original OS drive, creating a new partition on a new or existing disc, restoring the system image to the newly created partition (leaving the original intact) and then attempting the in-place upgrade on the copy.

That way you can view it as an experiment that you hope works out well (if you've done your homework), but if it doesn't you don't really lose anything but time.

I always just figured that since it was already a part of the system and it's in the Update & Security page that it would just naturally be successful and complete. I only ever did an OS upgrade (by myself) and that was from 3.11 to 95 in 1995, which was my first computer. In 2020 I had a tech update my 7 laptop to Win 10.

The Update and Security pages is simply for Windows Updates. The usual monthly system fixes and security patches.

If you are going into a full new OS (like Win 10 to Win 11) - this is not the spot.

Vendor drivers are the devil. Avoid.
Pretty hard (if not impossible) when it's a Dell. Trust me - I have tried.

I'm avoiding Dell. But I am curious, do they work for you? Desktop or laptops?
I was speaking in relation to @JBMusic. I do not use any Dell products for DAW work.

We have one 2022 Dell laptop here for basic office work - and yes - it can be fun to ensure this thing is up to date.

I've never had any problem

I also should mention that unlike probably many people on this forum I am not a professional music creator. I'm just a hobbyist. I love music very much and have all my life but at the age of 69 I've given up the dream of taking it any further many years ago. I suspect that folks like Vocalpoint are far beyond the hobbyist point and actually, at the very least use it as a part time vocation if not a full time one. A person in that position should choose the very best equipment that he/she can find. I'm not a pro or semi pro so I don't need the absolute best. I don't have a huge budget to spend on gear as I'm retired and on a fixed income. Don't get me wrong, I live comfortably and I have (at least at this point in time) a modest amount of $$$$ to spend on "toys" but my world wouldn't crumble if I had to or chose to put making music aside. Sometimes I think I'm taking this all much too seriously and seeing this is a new year I find myself re-evaluating how much I actually want to continue the music thing.

But that being said, I still have to deal with Windows 10 (or 11) to do my financial business. That's the most important thing at this point.

I do professional work but that does not mean I am not still looking for the best value. :)

I found out first hand what the Dell world costs when I had to buy my son a new laptop for university two years ago. That device easily costs way more than my primary custom ASUS workstation.

This is why I acquire parts and custom build everything - to get the most power (and especially flexibility/longevity) out of every part that comes into the studio. I wring the very last bit of value from everything before e-cycling or online sale.

My 2024 DAW is sitting in a 2011 case for example. Can't buy them like this anymore :)

It happens rarely enough that I don't remember details. But I do remember one night editing videos in Vegas, writing a soundtrack in Studio One with multiple virtual instruments, Edge was open (like Chrome, it hogs memory) and downloading large files fro the cloud, and a few other operations were going on. Vegas stopped in the middle of rendering a file. In a perfect world, things would have just slowed down while the apps fought for the computer, but it was like a house of cards collapsed. We'll see what happens with W11. I'm also curious about the M4.
They will be bringing out the Mac Studio with the M4 processor this year some time. That is what I would be waiting for if I were you.

I appreciate the advice. I'm strongly considering it, especially since it's delayed by only a few months. But I really need a new laptop, so it might be Mac laptop for 2025, and Mac Studio for 2026 if I start feeling limited by my Windows desktop. By then, I guess Apple will be up to the M10 :)

I haven't updated my W11-ready computer because I don't have time for any disruptions. However, the person at PC Audio Labs who integrated my computer highly recommends installing W11. He says W11 is more stable, and the overall performance will be better on my machine. In 20 years he's never steered me wrong about anything involving Windows computers (pro and con), so I'll take his advice.

As to Recall, I could really use the functionality. It's opt in, not opt out, but I hope when it's released you would be able turn it off temporarily if you don't want it to remember what you're doing.

If needed, I could just do all my online banking and such on my Mac. Or at least, I could after I buy a new Mac, because my current Macs can't update past Catalina. They're no longer receiving updates for browsers and such. I've been using both Windows and Mac for 30 years. They're equally problematic and equally wonderful...just in different ways.
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.2. Of course I am running Open Core Legacy Patch. This old computer is running
Studio One Version 7. Before I did the Open core I could not run even Version 6. I had nothing to lose on this old MacBook Pro so
I did it. I only use this Laptop in the evening to play with mixes from my main recording setup (2018 Mac Mini). Saved me from buying
an expensive used Mac or new Mac. For what I do with this Laptop Open Core as been a blessing so far.

So, some months down the line, is it the general concensus that S1 v7 behaves itself after Windows 10 has been updated to Windows 11?

And apart from the music side of things, is Windows 11 good enough (or better, no worse than Windows 10) for all the other stuff like gaming, business, etc - ie normal use?

It has come to that time

Windows 10 now has a 1 year (updates) extension via the Consumer ESU program and for business users (like me) - a three year enterprise ESU.

So logically - Windows 10 22H2 should be fine with Studio One AND Presonus should continue to permit S1 to run on it - until Oct 2028.

I won't be rebuilding my DAW on Windows 11 25H2 for a least a year - so I am not worried about "support" suddenly ceasing in three weeks.

However - should Presonus issue some "end of life" announcement - I will take it under advisement at that time.

I'm clicking 'buy' on my replacement some time today. I don't like replacing a PC that still runs great -even if it is 8 years old ;) Too bad it won't upgrade to 11.

I will likely convert it to Linux and see how I like that environment.

You could have just clicked "Buy ESU" (for 30 bucks) and got an extra year out of it - but after 8 years - maybe it's time for some shiny new fun :)

Enjoy! (do let us know what you bought and how you like it)

I'm the original poster. I am no longer concerned about this issue. I updated my PC to Windows 11 in August and it (with Studio One) is running fine. But I do need to decide what I'm going to do with the other 2 non musical (general purpose) Windows 10 PCs I have.

I installed Studio One Pro 7 on Windows 10 22H2 in January '25. A few weeks later I upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 (without re-installing Windows and apps).

Studio One worked fine with Windows 10, and it continued working with Windows 11. There was absolutely no difference in performance, stability and other aspects.

Also all of my other programs running on my computer continued working with Windows 11.

IMO there is no need to worry about Windows 11.

Michael

Shiny new fun is always good - the real pain is having to reinstall all your programs

I just left it a little late, so I I guess I'll have to buy the extension from MS (though it pains me greatly) to give me more time to decide what replacement machines to get, and actually get them, and yes, reinstall everything 🤬
