I would Like To See A Feature Request: Restore the pre-8.1 drag & drop replacement workflow

SLIKTRAX

New member
Since updating to Fender Studio 8.1.1, I found the new drag & drop replacement workflow slowed down one of the most common editing tasks in my workflow.

The change was significant enough that I reverted back to version 8.0.3.111164 purely because of this issue.

My workflow involves auditioning large numbers of drum samples etc. During a session I may replace the same kick, snare or percussion sample dozens or even hundreds of times until I find the right sound.

Previously the workflow was simple:

  • Hold Alt
  • Drag a replacement sample
  • Listen
  • Repeat

Now it requires selecting the target event(s) before dragging a replacement, then repeating that selection every time I want to audition another sample.

For repetitive sample replacement this adds unnecessary steps to something that was previously quick and efficient.

I'm not asking for the new replacement modes to be removed. If other users find them useful, that's absolutely fine.

What I'm asking is for one of the following:

  • Restore the pre-8.1 drag & drop behavior as the default, or
  • Add a preference that allows users to choose between the legacy workflow and the new workflow.

That would allow users who prefer the new behavior to keep it while allowing existing users to continue working with the workflow they originally purchased the software for.

At the moment, the drag & drop changes are the only reason I've reverted to 8.0.3.111164 instead of continuing to use the latest version.

Stick it in a Feature Request on the Fender site - post the link here and I’ll vote for it, seems like a very reasonable request and sensible option to have.

I upvoted your request. Thanks for creating it. 👍

Makng a request is always helpful, and I hope that works out with your workflow. I also understand having to revert back, when needs dictate
So as an alternative where it may apply...
If I may add a suggestion that might be worth consideration,, Instead of working with hundreds of samples, which I do understand is so vital for realism, or session tweaking. I assume you're dragging or positioning samples out on a grid? (per track). Or using somewhat long samples placed on a grid? Grid, meaning on the arrangement. A very effective way to minimize changing out samples is to drag samples onto an instrument, pad or key. That might be impact, Sample One, or your own hardware such as Machine, Roland drum machine, etc. Otherwise, it's the nature of the beast when having hundreds of samples placed out in the arrangement, or events that when rendered (frozen) take a long time to either play, change, or spool up. Working with an instrument, even with multiple samples, even in the hundreds, are way more efficient for a DAW to still be near instantaneous. I may not have your process fully down, but doing this for many years, and being a drummer and multi instrumentalist, typically such complaints that are about slow sample change processes, usually involve a re think towards workflow. I get that you had sufficient speed prior to ver. 8.1. It might even be due to some recent AI process, I don't know and bite my tongue for imagining such a thing. What I can offer is dealing with a huge number of samples (percussive at that), doesn't mean you have to take a hit on waiting

In the final analysis, you can render the instrument driven tracks to audio, anyway. However, session use and changing instruments quickly on the fly, shouldnt take long. OMMV, of course.

I have used (sample one) I am not a fan tbf, I also have Kick 3 and Psy kick I just don't like the way it feels and sounds. That said I much prefer manually slicing and placing the samples where I want such as say a kick roll it's just easier for me it's the work flow i learned and like working with plus it literally triggers my OCD as has changing the long term basic usage but that is a different issue on top.

I should probably note I am a UK Hardcore producer (I guess digital Producer is the term) I may use a midi controller at times, but mostly everything is in house (DAW to be precise).

Ok, so you're a UK, hardore producer? Lol.
Lets stay on track (no pun intended).
One quick way to keep sample playback quick while avoiding delays when sample swapping is keeping samples short. Your example of audio events dont look overly large, but they do look to be repetitive sample loops. If those loops are a part of one long audio or stream, that can definately bog things down quite a bit. These are general processes intended to get spedier results, and as stated, OMMV.
Cheers.

Some are loops, others are one shots that are shortened arranged and manipulated with filters and FX dependent on the need in this instance. the only loops that tend to get used are snare rolls sweep / uplift / down lifts etc, and even they get cut and re-bounced / manipulated so are not necessarily as original.

And in such instances such as snare rolls small in this genre it's not much of an option (Specifically lookin at the builds), it's all about the tension as is usually the case for most songs. But in UK Hardcore everything is extra and it's all for that main drop.

Not sure what you do or don't know about UK hardcore, in regard to the kicks etc the whole problem was sometimes you may have a kick and at first sounds great. But as the song progresses your like no this is not it. So you wish to change ALL and sitting their re-selecting every kick constantly and then drag and dropping plus the change in modifier key if I recall it's no longer alt + drag drop it's just not the move but I do appreciate the help / suggestions so thankyou.

Ok, so you are bouncing where it applies. Thats a good sign. Some just dont get that advantage, and I wont need to provide that info, further.

I'll check this selecting the target event(s) before dragging a replacement, then having to repeat that selection every time. That is an unnecessary extra step for not only drummers, but any intensive note/sample/loop replacement. The beauty of past Studio One developments have always been about faster, less clicking first, situations. Take for example comping. One simply drags out a section of any take (lane), and it automatically promotes. I see no reason to have to select a target, first. Drag, to drag and place. Period.

So Ill try this out as Ive only had Studio Pro for one month. Yet, enjoyed Studio One for many, years now.
Thanks for noting.

Exactly that is exactly why I LOVED Studio One, for me the first big tell tale in Fender was the automation change.

Can you please explain to me why their was a need to add the extras ??? yet some plugins VST's still allow you to go directly to the top and initiate it, to me that screams pointless.
Now this change on a default modifier key apparently it can be done by using CTRL and drag drop, according to a msg on Feature Request. Now while that is great news BUT why are you changing a long term default to do this? make the new change the new keys like WHO thinks like this ??

Sorry slight rant it just winds me up and legitimately triggers my OCD and makes me crash out lol.

Respectfully - what is currently triggering me is the giant billboard advertising in your posts.

This is a user-to-user community forum centered squarely around the discussion and use of Studio Pro - not Billboard magazine.

I can remove it, I just thought it was fun and colorful, I haven't used a forum for years so obviously haven't used a signature for time.

I get it.

However - it's probably better to keep it simple and create a meaningful signature like many of us already have - one that gives users quick detail about your current software and hardware environment.

In fairness it wasn't until way after the fact I noticed the not an official forum sign when i signed up, not in anyway meant as disrespect BUT i was as maybe apparent trying to connect direct. While that didn't happen it at least got me opening a request to which some members voted so that's great.

Respectfully (and in all fairness as well) - the "non-official" nature of the forum is neither here nor there to be honest.

It is just common courtesy to join the crew in here, discuss whatever it is that is on your mind and do it all while being professional and blending in.

A lot of our members are here exactly for this reason - we do not really need some crazy "TikTok" vibe that devours other sites and forums out there. I think we all simply dig a cool space to discuss our favorite little DAW and hopefully help others while hanging here.

RESPECTFULLY what is your problem ?? I removed it, I was having a chat and explaining myself and how I got here. Yet your still harping on about it, would you like me to leave the community too ??
Just say the word boss it's not a problem.

Appreciate the explanation and thank you.

I was merely explaining myself too - the general vibe of the forum etc etc.

No need to get dramatic.

I might not of been in a forum for a long time but I am certainly aware of how to use one and I am within my rights to have what ever i want in my signatures if YOU or whomever doesn't want that then remove image signatures, the fact I suggested I could remove it and did so anyway out of respect.
And don't sit here with your respectfully I know well what you were doing I was not born yesterday, and don't worry I will be out of your hair as soon as an admin deletes my account.
