Discussion Thread for "The Huge Book of Studio One Tips and Tricks"

I am a technical communicator so I feel your pain about redoing the screenshots. It will be worth it in the end! I often amend the existing screenshots e.g replace presonus with fender logos rather than taking a whole new screen grab.

Thanks, but please be aware it will take some time. I did not receive an advance copy of hte program, so I'm basically having to write a new 1,000 page book from the ground up, starting from the first day of the program's release.

Even though I have a Pro+ subscription until October, I am delaying the upgrade to FSP8 for three reasons. The first is that I have no problems with S1 7 and want to continue working on recovering some of my old music. The second is because I'd like to wait until there's a bug fix release. Lastly, I would especially like to see Craig Anderton's book on it.

The current book fills in what is missing in the User Manual - how to use all of this capability in tandem to solve our common, and not so common, audio problems. Anyone getting the book should not overlook the many audio examples and free files that come with it. In going over these again, Craig, I would think that you're doing some QA work for them, at the very least. I can't understand why they would not want to include you in their beta program.

I used to be included. However, remember I'm not an employee, but an independent contractor who works with multiple companies. Fender may not know how scrupulously I honor non-disclosure agreements. Also I was not as active as others in reporting bugs, because the main reason I needed an early copy was for the book. Often, by the time I went to report a bug, it had already been found by people who were concentrating solely in chasing bugs.

Although I try to release books in a timely fashion, in this case that's not possible. I would advise not waiting for the book to upgrade to v8 (although waiting for the first substantial bugfix makes sense).

The Studio One forum has graciously offered this sticky as a home for questions, comments, and suggestions regarding The Huge Book of Studio One Tips & Tricks. The book is available from Sweetwater Publishing as a bundle that includes a PDF of the eBook itself along with audio examples, presets, FX Chains, and Track Presets.

Lke Studio One, the eBook continues to evolve. Also like Studio One, purchasers are entitled to free “point” updates. (If there’s ever a major rewrite to create a new edition, it will be available to existing owners at a reduced price.) So far, there have been 7 major, free updates since the book was introduced. The updates include new tips, but older tips are often revised to reflect changes in Studio One, or to improve functionality.

Doing updates turns the book into an interactive experience. I don’t claim to know everything! Many of your suggestions have been incorporated in subsequent versions, but you’re also encouraged to ask questions if there are aspects that could be clearer. My goal is to make this eBook a valuable reference and most importantly, a source of inspiration for all Studio One users. I welcome your participation in this thread to help further that goal.
When will the new (Fender Studio Pro 8) version of the book be available ?

It's hard to say. I wasn't able to obtain an advance copy of v8. So, writing a 1,000+ page book from scratch (and redoing all the screenshots, as well as generating new presets and audio examples) starting on the day the program was released - well, you can understand why it will take quite a while.

Fortunately, the current book remains 95% relevant. However, there will be no more free updates for the current Studio One Edition, which has reached "end of life." The v8 book will be the start of a new Fender Studio Pro Edition. Owners of the current Edition will be able to buy the new Edition at a reduced price - I need to discuss that with Sweetwater, because I know it will take some backend work to build the price reduction into the system. It will probably be 50% off.

My plan at the moment is to forge ahead, and try to complete the new version in time for version 8.5, whenever that appears. Hopefully going forward, I can obtain an advance copy. That will speed up getting book updates done in a timely manner. Thank you for understanding.

Well, I’ll be buying that new version of the book for sure ! Thanks for your timely response, Craig.. I assume it’ll be available at the same place , Sweetwater publishing .

Yes, Sweetwater Publishing for sure. I'm running into some issues with FX Chains, so that might slow things down. Overall, though, the book is moving along and I estimate it's 4-5% done. This will be the first edition of a Fender Studio Pro book, so of course there will be free updates for whatever I miss! There's more to this update than meets the eye.

It's 1000 pages but there's a lot of nice formatting and screenshots. It's still a pretty big book but don't let the page count intimidate you, it isn't 1000 pages of pure text.

Thanks for pointing that out! With each update, I try for a more mobile-friendly layout and more compact writing. It's definitely true that a picture is sometimes worth 1,000 words. I'd also like to point out that the book is a series of short tips, not a long narrative. Individiual tips are only a few pages each. So, readers can pick and choose the tips that interest them.

I really appreciate everyone's interest in the book. What started as a way to consolidate my blog posts has sure changed over the years :)

But it is 1000 pages worth of quality information!
With step-by-step instructions, clear and straightforward explanations, and many free files to just drag in to use. It's one of the most useful books that I have seen in many years. I give it an A+. And I'm known to be a tough grader!

Thanks again for the props! Redoing the book from scratch is turning out to be worth the effort. For example, I found that with the EQ-Based Mono-to-Stereo Converter, the description in the book is correct but the preset's Splitter should be in Channel Split mode, not Normal. I'm also updating some of the presets to take advantage of new features. I'm sure I'll still miss a few things (particularly with respect to terminology changes between Studio One and Studio Pro) but that's what free updates are for...right?
