Stem separation

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, guys.
The cross grade price is $200. I searched for vouchers, and they all require an existing licence - Pro Tools, Izotope RX, etc. I don’t have any of these.

I just wrote a blog post about using stem separation to fix a vocal from an album done in the 60s. The cool part is that if you separate the vocal and flip the phase, you can cancel the vocal from a two-track mix (attention karaoke fans, haha). Then you can create a second vocal stem and use Melodyne, EQ, whatever to fix it and mix it back with the two-track. The results are shockingly good.

Yes, the blog is fixed! But I don't see a way for people to comment. That's too bad, the feedback was helpful. Maybe it's just some switch they need to turn on.

Does anyone know of any software that can do this in Stem separation?
This Studio One Stem Seperator tool looks like the Serato tool with a slightly different (and better) workflow. There is also a song-by-song website up using the Serato tool. https://serato.com/studio or /plugin .

I have done a set of songs for my band for rehearsals. The separation with Drums, Bass and Vocals usually works great. The Vocals and the instruments are usually where the misdirection of sounds come in. What I did was take the Studio takes of the cover songs the band wanted to cover and did the recording minus the one part or another for each member. It was a huge success and there has been some tightening of the band. It is nice to be able to practice if the drummer doesn't show up :).

I'm sure there were other posts here earlier that seem to have disappeared! Maybe I'm going mad!

Nope, the question (installation issues) was moved to a dedicated thread:

Depending on the source material I like the results - but sometimes I think the artifacts are a bit too many. But keep in mind this is the first iteration of the feature so it might improve soon.
I totally agree with this. My friend who is a great keyboard player and singer recorded a lot of music with the UO (university of Oregon)
fusion band way back in late 70s and early 80s. Songs were very well recorded. He gave me 3 songs to try the Stem Separation on. Wow, is all I can say!! When I soloed the tracks yes you can hear some artifacts but, when mixed together it was very good. We were both very happy with
the results.

Then I get a song from my other friend. This song was not recorded very well and the Stem Separation was not good.
So yes, In my case the source material made a world of difference.

I am really looking forward to see how this feature improves in the Future :p

Yep, I used a 40% off voucher from the Avid Pro Tools 2024.10 upgrade. Loving Spectralayers Pro 11! A great addition for any DAW and as a standalone. There are definitely deals out there to be had. Now is the time.

Logic Pro 11.2 has improved on its Stem Separation feature. The quality is much better and they added two new stems. I did a side by side comparison with Studio One 7 and Logic Pro wins. I really would like to see Studio One catch up. Right now I’m doing all my stem separation with Logic Pro and SpectaLayers. Logic Pro, really impressive.

I noticed that Logic can now separate guitar. Have you tried this?

Yes, the latest Logic release added guitar and piano stem separation.

Did anyone a test/comparison with the updated AI model? I didn’t have much time and just did a quick test with an existing project where I previously extracted the vocals for a cover version.

But the result of the new stem extraction puzzled me a bit. The waveform display was nearly identical at first sight, and there wasn’t a noticeable difference between old and new vocal stem.

No noticeable difference to me. Is there something you have to do to get the new AI model because all I did was upgrade?

I forgot to mention that I did upgrade the stem separation file. I think it was something like 1.75 gig but yeah, no noticeable difference.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. Bummer. And yes, I meant the download of the new model with 1.7GB. It probably didn't bring as much improvement as hoped (and delivered by the competitors).

This is a new tool to Studio One so give it some time. And it will never be perfect anyway, you can't turn a bread back into its ingredients.

I do have high hopes for a steady noise removal option though (hums, fans, drones, hisses). As opposed to separating modulated components (instruments, vocals) I feel that AI should be able to lift steady noises off cleanly, eventually.

I don't expect perfection, I expect progress. I currently have professional contact with the field of AI, and the improvements that are being made are happening at a dizzying pace. I would just like to see more speed here from Presonus. Stem separation was also “new” with Logic Pro, wasn't it?

I'm assuming Presonus didn't write the algorithm to do this, .rather they bought a third party programming library and inserted into studio One and wrote a UI around it?

I notice Native Instruments Maschine 3 does something very similar, and I start to wonder if they are using the same thing.

Well said and Logic Pro quality is really good. 👍🏽
