Routing one or more VSTs in a multi-instrument to multiple tracks

Hi,

I( did search before asking this.)

I have a multi-instrument that consists of:
  • SSD5 Drums, with routing set successfully to mixer channels 1-12
  • Royotoms VST
  • Impact preset
I find that if I set up a track with just an SSD5 Drums preset, not a multi-instrument, I can route it to multiple mixer channels as shown in this video

However, if I add that preset to a multi-instrument, I seem to lose that ability.

Can it be done, and if so, can you advise how? Thanks.

No. The purpose of the Multi Instrument plugin is to combine several VSTs to act as one singular instrument. The individual VSTs do not have any own dedicated outputs anymore, just the one from Multi Instrument. You're using the wrong tool for whatever you tried to establish.

Have you tried routing the one instrument track to multiple instruments, each with their own channels?
I haven't tried that - could you point me to a concise explanation of how to? Yes, I can web search it, but that's less reliable these days that asking a human! Thanks.

The problem is, that we can only guess, what you are trying to do. Therefore any answer is based on our guesses, not your desired outcome. By explaining it a bit more, the answers will get more precise as well.
For example, my guess is, that you are trying to double some, but not all drums from SSD, like maybe the toms with royo toms or the kick with Impact. @SwitchBack seems to think of drum replacements triggered by one MIDI clip. And so on. More description would greatly help us help you :)

Here is my mapping. Royotoms don't need multi-channel routing, nor does impact (just 3 samples).

The goal here is a drum kit assembled from these three instruments, with the SSD5 drums going to mixer channels 1-12 (that's how many outs it offers). I considered loading some extra samples into SSD5, which does allow that, but it doesn't have velocity switching, which I need.

I did a quick test. You have to enable the Multi-Outs for each instrument before you create the Multi-Instrument. AFAIK, you can't do it later.

In my example I created two tracks, enabled the outs for each instrument and then drag-and-dropped Groove Agent onto the first (Impact) track. The second track is now orphaned and can be deleted.

Correcting myself: It was bothering me that it should be possible to change the outs in Multi-Instruments later. So I tried again and it is possible.

I'm still not sure whether my example is actually the setup/solution the OP is looking for but it might be useful for people finding this thread via search later.

We might talk past each other, or you discovered a severe bug. To rule out misunderstandings, I recorded what I did. you can clearly see, that multi-outs are removed. Links to Dropbox, where you can watch it.

... that multi-outs are removed.
They are not removed, just hidden behind a folder icon in the console at the bottom of the channel. Click it to open the folder and SP displays all the channels.

Thanks, everyone. An important note - I am on Studio One v7. There may be differences in capability for those using v8. But I will test the above suggestions.

Got it! Yes, you're right.

- When first creating multiple outs and then moving the instrument to Multi-Instrument, it shows those channels in the folder.
- When first creating a Multi-Instrument and loading instruments from there, you can't create multiple outs.

And therefore I think you discovered a severe bug. Either it was intended for plugins in Multi-Instrument to have multiple outs, or it wasn't. Not both, depending on how you approach setting up Multi-Instrument! Fender needs to either add away to activate multi-outs from within Multi-Instrument, or prevent them from being carried over.
