The reason they say that it needs to be on every track is due to a limitation with Softube Fader. If you don't put on the Console plugin, Softube Fader doesn't know about the channel.
BUT, Faderport doesn't care. It recognizes every fader in the Studio One console. The Softube Console only needs a plugin on any track that you want to use Console One on. And, what's nice is that if you have the Console One screen open, pressing the Select buttons on Faderport will bring that channel's Console One display into focus. Likewise, if you hit the channel selectors or solo/mutes or (my favorite) sends on Console One, they are reflected perfectly in both Studio One and Faderport.
Another way of looking at it is Console One is the channel strip that you bring into focus through the Select buttons on Faderport. It's really slick.
As far as the DSP hit of having it on every track. I don't find it a worry. Console One loads up with every section (i.e. preamp, filter, EQ, compressor, Drive, etc) deactivated, and looking at the Studio One Performance Monitor panel, it registers as 00 CPU, same as Mixtool (though, I am on an M4). Of course, as you enable sections in Console One, you get the same kind of DSP hit that you would if you put in a plugin for that function.
BTW, I don't know how the used market works in your area, but in my area (Toronto) there are often used Faderports available. Usually the seller is someone on ProTools or Logic that have integration limitations that we in Studio One don't. That's how I got mine.
