Has presonus gone back to it's original business model, ie, version 8. 8.5 then 9

AFAIK maintenance releases are 8.0.x (current 8.0.3), feature releases are 8.x.x, and complete version releases are 8.x.x to 9.x.x.

Their model has never changed. Still identical to what @OutrageProductions has listed.

However - there are no guarantees on whether we get a v8.1 (Most likely) vs a v8.5 (unlikely) - here in the early going of V8.

If I were to consult my Spidey Sense - I feel like we will get a v8.1 - within the next month or so....

As long as we're dotting O's (purposely miss lettered) it would not be remiss if we didn't say it was Fender doing the naming. Hey, if you're going to float or go down with the ship, you really should be hoisting your actual flag.
Its likely, Fender left it to the core software group to do that version branding.

So if 8. x is fourth coming, will i have to pay for this version?

i hope you're teasing a new version coming soon with this one!:D
Well, that was the usual diplomatic statement: β€œx” could be anything (he even didn’t confirm .1) and β€œsoon” could be anytime. Summary: there will be an update in a foreseeable future.

So they are still doing the three or four feature drops a year,?

I think so. I haven't seen communication otherwise from Fender. At the end, it is all about the content of those 'feature drops' Maybe Fender will drop there highly anticipated 'pay per session' subscription modelπŸ˜‰

Hah, as if I had a clue as to when the next release will be. Actually, I'm so far removed as to WHEN next releases will be from this DAW. That ship has sailed quite a while ago. I never ask, and no longer expect. I'm using Studio One 7 because it does all that I need to complete projects. My only point is it's now a Fender banner on this DAW. "Fender" will bear the brunt of what happens now. Basically, correcting the OP's reference to "Presonus" here, is all. πŸ˜‰

Its a relevant question. My guess is:
They (the Presonus children, minding the store at that time) sold that flimsy bag of goods on version 7. As it's now Fender being more involved (and that is no guarantee, either), the rules have changed. No promises. But I would suspect the general flow of releases to somewhat continue as they (Presonus versions 1 through 6) had which most of the time was fair. A few quick fixes. A v dot 2 to v dot 5 with a few nice added bonus features. A few more quick fixes, then let it ride until the natives get restless. Then, speeing an all new (now you pay for this, as we dont do this for free) release.
