About, oh, eight years ago now I was absolutely fed up with my Apollo. It had been…fine, but it never wowed me in the way I expected it to when I gave up my Digi003. Everything worked okay and the preamps were good. But it always felt like it was revered in a way that…I dunno…felt over the top. It always left me wanting more.
I had a peer who dug Presonus stuff and she got a Quantum 2. I had briefly used some Firepod and hated it a few years prior, but I was using Studio One by this point and figured I’d play around with it on a location recording. I was absolutely floored by the thing. I thought its conversion was spectacular, flexible, and the preamps were as good as the UA stuff. I went home, got rid of my apollos and a few days later had a pair of the 2632 show up. I ended up getting a Quantum 2 for remotes and extra digital io. All three are still in use around the country by friends who are borrowing them.
It was rock solid for seven years. Granted, I was on a Mac and never changed OS, but dang. It was reliable, fast, always sounded good, and super easy to use. I had to get a new interface when they stopped supporting it, and the new Quantum line didn’t do it for me. I jumped ship to a new brand and it’s the best interface I’ve ever used. That said, the quantum is just stellar and while I’m sure it didn’t catch on like they probably hoped, Presonus should hang their hat on that architecture. It’s hard imagining a more straightforward interface than that and I do miss it.
I regret not getting a 4848, as I’d still probably be on that system.
