Studio Pro 8 - Discussion Thread

The new Mute Logic for Instrument channels is flawed.

It was inevitable that this would happen at some point. The expectation of how the mute button should behave on instrument channels has varied among users for years. The way it works in your video would drive me absolutely crazy. Especially when multiple channels are controlling the same instrument. To me, it would make sense if muting the instrument data did not mute the audio channel. But apparently, this behaviour is what people want.

Yes, muting an instrument track shouldn't mute the channel too, ever. That would be like muting effects (reverbs, delays) at the output.

When using Melodyne on Ara, the fades aren't work good... Could somente check that, please?
You have to press this little yellow buttton in the event inspector:

What I think should happen is that mute remains independent (as it has been for years) but that the color of the related channel turns a different color - to help clue someone (like me) who has forgotten they muted one of them.

Morning rant:
Would love if this thread could continue to pivot from name change woes to what features folks are enjoying (or not), or what 'advanced or pro' features remain absent or underdeveloped.
I think people are simply going to express their feelings. There's plenty of room for bettering this DAW be it new, or keeping what one has and using it.

Frankly, I find it quite interesting how people flock to something new for the sake of new, never really reaping the benefits of the previously released version. Sure, a new look, and feel is exciting. Will it add to one's compositional benefits? Doubtful. Although in this newest release, there are a bunch of guitar sounds, modeling and cab sims. So maybe it will be beneficial to some right out of the gate.

For me, I would want to see continued attention to midi editing, like deeper articulation control and cc lane tools.
Same here. There are also a lot of essential features that were never added through 8 long iterations.
The few I hear requested in detail seem quite specialized or geared toward working with traditional film score/large orchestral templates, where I view that S1 has leaned into track presets/drag and drop functionality... I think for the majority of "pro" or advanced workflows, StudioPro is quite capable...
S1 is certainly capable. Even without scoring. I often transfer my videos as they evolve into Studio One so that I can play along with them, and the process is seamless. Of course I edit in that dedicated video editor, and edit in Studio One where audio is concerned. I never final mix the two in Studio One. The export video quality with Studio One is not good, but for returning the audio to my video program, things synchronize very well!

why would someone change daws and learn a new ecosystem if someone has been using Cubase to earn for decades to make music. My thought is those that have were attracted to the S1 workflow, probably in the 'golden era' of updates between v4 and v6. Its been 10 years or so that Ive spent in S1. I know my way around other daws, but I know Studio Pro more than the others and after a few days with it, have no intention of jumping ship, but it certainly crossed my mind the more time I spent on socials.
We often can't answer for why people do a lot of things. Maybe they need a fresh environment, or specific tools one DAW might hold over another. Maybe that's a better clip launcher, or better sounding bundled instruments. I cant even answer why people run out to grab the latest major release and not let the dust settle first. Sure, they do get a nice intro offer and run with that. All the while keeping their down rev version if they need to still work from that. Unfortunately, people often invite change, thinking change is just going to provide something that is better. Rarely do they consider the snags. Those fuzzy return an old preset only to find there's some gotcha along the way, or even plugin failure. Oh, they'll be a good many from this release.
The good thing is they will get fixed!
What we can look forward to is a rock solid DAW. Nothing is perfect, but Studio One does invite fast drag and build manipulation. The Fender version will as well. Its the same meat and potatoes.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with Reddit, FB or any other mass overkill of opinions.

Im good for several years with version 7. I also can say the same for version 6, only I like that they threw in the kitchen sink, Orchestra, Presence Editor, etc.

Would love to know why I am wrong...please educate me.
None needed. Just stay away from Reddit talking points, find your place with Studio One, and let wind catch the sails. People will talk. Some will make sense, some..... not so.

Considering the hardware/OS requirements have gone up compared to Studio One 7 the changes can't be superficial only.

It probably just means they built the source code with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio and that's upped the requirements.

That's from some time ago :D and yes, probably. But a compiler update is a major under-the-hood change and often comes with gremlins.

Anyway I've just installed it and I've got things to say...

Actually I haven't.

Carry on...

I hope it's okay to ask here:
Does anyone here have the Kush Audio Hammer Mk2 plugin and would be willing to run a short test with it using FSP8?

That tears it. I'm done. This feels to much like the Gibson/Cakewalk wedding. As another longtime user said:

It's not going over well with THIS longtime PRESONUS Studio One user. I used to work for Presonus. Been using Studio One from day one. I was even involved with it's ancestor Kristal Audio Engine. I'll continue to use PRESONUS Studio One V6.4 for the time being but it's time to find another DAW that's worthy of my trust. As was mentioned above Yamaha has been a far more responsible shepherd of the Steinberg brand and Cubase. I was a long time Cubase/Nuendo user before I became involved with Presonus. Maybe it's time to revisit Cubendo land. Back in the day Presonus and its users were almost like an extended family.

The writing's been on the wall for some time. I knew when they shut down the official company Presonus forums it was going south.
Sorry you think that I went through the Gibson/Cakewalk thing as well, But I going to ride this out a little more and see what happens.

Appreciate your comments... well said. There’s a lot of noise out there. It's refreshing to be in a forum with thoughtful, meaningful discourse. I come here for Studio One / Studio Pro conversation and almost always take away some genuinely useful insight.

Maybe for 1:1 VSTs (1 track in, 1 channel out) the channel could unmute/solo with the track, but for multi-output VSTs that wouldn't be good.

Studio Pro (SP) related/adjacent re: bundled plugins:

I spent about an hour with Tonalic essential -- thanks for flagging that it was available @Luny .

PSA to not make the same mistake I did (lol):
I skipped the walk through video and initially opened the instrument by drag/drop -- selecting "Tonalic Instrument" like I would Kontakt or any other instrument. I didn't see that it has it's own browser tab.

It was not a pleasant experience using "Tonalic Instrument". I wasn't enjoying the "deep integration" with Studio Pro...I couldn't drag and drop into the arranger and was operating from a small plugin window that I found difficult to navigate.

I appreciated what it was doing...the instrument sounded nice and I had a quick jam session with some addictive drums 2, Session prime bass, and my Strat (for amp/pedals I used mustang native and also installed the free pedals from Safari Pedals), and Repro/Diva. I was happy with the sound and everything ran speedy on my rig. But the workflow with Tonality within that little window was an unpleasant experience. I thought, for sure, this is not for me.

And then, a few minutes ago as I was typing this I opened Studio Pro (SP) to refresh my memory of all the things I wanted to complain about, and saw the "Tonalic" tab. Ah-- I get the integration now! A much better experience! Complete 180.

I haven't looked into the upgraded versions/subscriptions, but I think this is pretty powerful tool! For example, if I had to write a "cinematic folk" collection for sync, or something like that, or time-sensitive work, I think I'd be all over this.

The elements version is indeed limited, but I'm going to spend some more time with it and actually watch the tutorial videos.

I was initially turned off by the "explore page"...but after some thought, I've changed my mind -- these are real players -- nice they and the instruments they're playing are showcased and highlighted.

Further experimenting, I had the thought to pull a random chord progression from scaler 3. I learned I can drag that onto the chord track, and have the Tonalic patterns follow the chords. I imagine the more expensive versions (not sure if subscription or perpetual) allow for individual note editing -- would love that! But as is -- man... this is pretty cool!

It was nice to throw together a fresh backing track for me to jam over in a matter of minutes. Good to know in a pinch.

Curious to hear what others think!

Thanks for reading!

PS. I'll add one minor annoyance and wonder if there is a way to customize:
Minor annoyance -- I think it'd be nice feature to be able to customize/ re-arrange the tabs at the top of the browser as "Tonalic" now appears next to Splice. I don't use either much, so would be nice to remove or move to the end (would prefer "pool" and "files" to be after "instruments" and "effects".

Its a far, far better place here (in this forum) than out there in the cold. : )

Good luck with the new version, THW! As a guitarist, I'm usually inspired by a new guitar sound or effect. That usually leads to a B line to playing and writing ASAP. It's one of those very cool and refreshing ways of stimulating the senses with something new. Have fun and let the new plugins, effects, sample One automation and other goods find great results!
Cheers.

May I humbly suggest the UA Paradise Guitar Studio demo for further stimulating your senses.

I did the trial and was VERY close to purchasing. The freebie UAD Showtime 64 amp sweetened the deal too! That amp actually ended up being all I really needed for a project I'm working on, and on guitar I'm usually playing (or trying to play) modern metal, so I couldn't justify the spend -- it's a sweet deal though! Really enjoyed it. I am having fun with Mustang Native, but Paradise really incredible (love switching up mics/cabs....so much control!)
