Studio One & External Audio Editor (Izotope RX)

hey again

I've looked into some vids but haven't found a solution yet

Is there a way to edit a file in an external audio editor ?

I Logic I'd simply right click on an event --> edit with external audio editor --> do some processing there --> save file and it'd be updated in the timeline

Not sure if this a thing in S1 yet and I was wondering how you guys accomplish such task

Any hint is mucho appreciated

No, unfortunately. It's the one thing I really miss from my old days with Cakewalk/Sonar too. When I brought it up on the old S1 forum way back when the universal response seemed to be "Why would you want to do that"? But it was incredibly useful to assign your own dedicated audio editor within the DAW, edit a clip from within the DAW, and update the clip all without leaving the DAW environment. The philosophy of S1 is that those functions can all be done by zooming, envelopes, event gain and fx, etc, which works well honestly, and I've come to terms with it. But the option to use a dedicated audio editor is still something I'd very much like to see. Joe Gilder and others have some excellent videos on audio editing in S1 that helped to ease the pain :)

Thanks AAV

When I think of audio editing, as a game sound designer, I think of
De-crakle
De-click
Noise Removal
Spectral correction
etc...etc... I could go on for the next 10 minutes XD

All dedicated modules that no DAW developer with a sane mind would ever consider developing from scratch since there are 3rd party companies whose sole job is to sell those.
Guess that's why all the other DAWs I've tried always had that option.

Guess we'll have to wait for Studio One: I've been doing game audio for 16 years now and S1 is an excellent tool for this purpose as well. (is like Reaper but much much much better designed with a lot more & better functionalities)

However I'll dig more into RX Connect and see if that's possible.

Thanks again!

One option could be to invest in Steinberg´s Spectra Layers which would work via ARA inside of Studio One. Full version is not cheap though.

Steinberg WaveLab also has ARA and works inside S1
Sure, but except basic spectral editing doesn´t provide the features needed by coro as specified in his second post

Thank you all again

to my knowledge RX has no real competitor right?
Spectralayers, afaik, doesn't have pretty much all the main modules I use in RX so it's not an option. (also how Steinberg does things is pretty much the reason why I'm a happy Studio One user now XD)

Copilot gave me the answer for anyone who'll be interested in the future

Will need to check if quality is on par but at least there's one and supports ARA2

I use Acon acoustica and it's great BUT there is a bug in the latest version which means that the cursor scrolls to the end of the event when you press stop. I think it only affects S1 because they didn't know about it until I reported it but it's a deal-breaker because you just can't use it in any meaningful way.

This isn't going to be fixed for a while (until the next major release of Acoustica) but Acon support sent me the install pack for the original version I used which worked fine.

For reference 7.4.7 works.

Apart from this it's a great product, and much better value than RX, but you need to be aware of this bug in the latest version if you're a S1 user.

@OP. If you own RX11 it will run as ARA2 in Studio One.
Just drag the plugin from the effects browser directly onto the audio clip. It will add as an Event Fx rather than a normal track Fx. Then when you double click the clip you get the Rx editor right there inside S1, just like normal audio editing. It's a very civilized and efficient way to work. I promise you will not want to go back to an external editor once you have tried it.

(Other ARA stuff: Melodyne, Wavelab, Spectralayers, VocAlign, Repitch, Synth V)

This. Is the way. And the only way - with RX.

There is no concept of getting RX Connect to work. Believe me - I have tried.

I didn’t realize you could use Wave Lab as ARA! I used to use it inside Sonar way back as what they called a “Tool Copy” You had to add it to the Tools Menu.
I now have it as the default Editor inside of Vegas. The default is to Sound Forge but I’ve been using Wave Lab Elements since version 4. I upgraded from version 7 to 13 for only $45 last fall.
Once you get used to the workflow of an editor like Wave Lab editing audio in any Daw seems pretty clunky.

The two big wins with ARA is that apps appear in the edit section of the S1 screen (you can still detach and/or zoom them) but also that you don't have wait to load your file into them so it is much quicker to hop in and out of it.

I'd love it if Presonus would promote the ARA thing a bit more and make it a bit less hidden. Melodyne is integrated into the menus so you have "Edit with Melodyne" and "Remove Melodyne" but any other ARA stuff you have to know that it is ARA, then drag it onto the event and the only way I know to remove it is to find it in the Inspector. It would be cool if the audio context menu had an "Edit with ARA" and "Remove ARA" or similar.

ARA is a real jewel in the crown and I feel it is a bit undersold at present. I'm not even sure there is a way to list the installed ARA plugins. You get to see them mentioned briefly in the S1 start-up sequence but that's about it.

Perhaps worth mentioning (if you didn't know already) that if you right click an audio event then there's an option "event fx" which then lists out all the ARA plugins you have installed. Okay, it's not in the main menu but I rarely use that anyway and this quick menu is far more useful anyway.

@darren, it absolutely is worth mentioning, especially in my case because I've never noticed that entry in the context menu even though I use that menu all the time.
Not quite sure how I missed it but that makes it a whole lot more convenient to add and remover ARA stuff. Thanks and thanks again. (y)

Ok next question. Wave lab as example is a stand alone application. So what do you need to do to get it on the list of plugins or do you just drag the icon from the desktop? Sorry Im away from my computer otherwise I would have tried this.

You don't need to do anything. S1 automatically lists out all the plugins you have which ARA compatible.

It should already be there if you have installed the VST3
