Solved Some MIDI knobs not picked up by "MIDI Learn"

This honestly might be really basic, but I'm just not figuring it out. Also, I'm not the best researcher, though I did look around at forums and YouTube - as well as peaked through the manual online.

To the issue:

So, I have 8 knobs on my MOXF8. They all work. When I twist them, I can see that Studio One recognizes info is being sent to the DAW in the "activity meter". (They change parameters on my keyboard just fine as well.)

So far so good.

Now when I attempt to MIDI learn each knob, only 3 of them are picked up (the 1st, 2nd, and 4th knobs). How random. Not sure what I did. So the knobs work fine on my keyboard to control parameters. Theyre showing activity in Studio One... But only 3 can be learned.

Sort of lost here. Hopefully I've provided enough info. Thanks in advance for any info you can give.

I'm using Windows 10. I believe I'm on Studio One 6.

Welcome to the Forum!

Usually that points to a keyboard settings issue.

Have you made any custom settings for it or is running the factory defaults?

What steps did you use to add the Yamaha MOXF8 to Studio One?

Did you try any of the Yamaha device files included in Studio One?

Check out page 117 "DAW Remote Control Assignments - DAW" of the following PDF document.
I don't see Studio One listed but you can check with Yamaha support for more updated details.

Thank you! Appreciate your suggestions very much.

I'm still troubleshooting. I followed a guide from YouTube to set up the MIDI in Studio One. I found the corresponding keyboard in the list and adjusted the appropriate parameters, as you can see in the pics below:

(apologize if the screenshots are confusing; i pasted multiple pics in MS Paint; the "send to" function is currently disabled as you can see in the second screenshot, but I do not believe would be relevant here)

Perhaps I should try to test assigning the knobs to MIDI in Cubase? If the same problem happens, that would mean it has to be the settings on my keyboard right?

I hope I dont have to factory reset my MOXF8 because I have a lot of presets..

Does the Yamaha MOXF8 provide a way to backup all your custom settings?

@Trucky That's a great suggestion. Ok im looking into backing up presets so I can

Great idea. I did back it up and factory reset. unfortunately the problem persisted.

What does Studio One's MIDI Monitor say? Does the knob on the MOXF send MIDI CC data to Studio One like the other ones?
Thanks for the response. I think we're getting closer to the answer. I have new information:

In this first example, you will see it triggers under "description" (but not messages) when I turn it. This is one of the working, assignable knobs.

In this second example, it instead triggers under "messages" but not "description". This is a non-working, unassignable knob.

Yes, that was my guess. The working knob sends CC74 (Filter Cutoff). The non-working knob does not send MIDI CC messages, it sends SysEx. So it's not surprising that MIDI Learn does not work.

Which knob is it? Some knobs on workstations send SysEx, some send MIDI CC. That's by design. Check if you can configure the knob via UTILITY > MIDI > CONTROL ASSIGN. I have a MoXF but it's not set up currently.

It's weird. Because its the 3,5,6,7, and 8th knobs that dont work. But the 1,2, and 4th do. even after factory reset. lol. I will see if i can reconfigure now and get back to you

No go. I see nothing in regards to CONTROL ASSIGN. However, google suggested it may have to be set up in MOXF editor program. It looks like this:

I've circled the 8 knobs in question. I'm going to fiddle around...

Do the knobs send different messages when you're in MASTER mode? I'm just speculating again, as I haven't used my MoXF in a long time.
No, I tried it. Same messages. And unfortunately I found no solutions in either MOXF Editor or MOXF Remote Editor. Ultimately, this is a Studio One Forum. And I've since discovered this is not a Studio One issue. So, I think this thread is now dead.

I may just end up buying a separate MIDI controller. I don't see why only some of the knobs were not mapped to properly output MIDI data (or CC or whatever) by default.

I really, really appreciate the help, though.
