Null VST

Let me pose a weird question to all you good folks.

I have an instrument track on which I shall compose notes (call it the source track). The source track is driving several other instruments tracks, each of which is a different part in a multitimbral instrument (PPG Wave 3.V, if you are interested) - ie. layering all the parts (done this way so I can apply different inserts/automation - it's a lot easier than trying to do so in the instrument itself)

Anyhoo, I was wondering if there is any such VST as a kind of 'null' VST, ie. it only produces MIDI, nothing else. Currently for my source track, I am just using another synth (a Presonus one) with the output muted. This works fine, but it is/looks kind of clunky - maybe I'm being a bit fussy, but there it is.

I am thinking this null VST would be a bit like using Stepic, but without producing arps all over the place.

This is not holding me up at all, I was just wondering ;)

I have already tried that, first thing I thought of.

However, if I create a track and put MI on it, and then drag instances of my instrument into it from the Browser, I can find no way to adjust the MIDI channels of each of them. So instead I tried to create the source track with MI on it, and then drag the other tracks (which I can adjust MIDI channel for) into it, the instrument window gets opened instead. There does not appear to be a way of doing this using the Inspector that I can see.

But thanks muchly for getting back to me on this 👍

I'm certain that the way you suggest is the way to do this (it would make sense after all), except I just can't work out a way to accomplish it 🤷‍♂️

I'm getting older and thicker, methinks - am I just being stupid? :(

Now I'm confused. Any track always only sends on one channel. How did you create one track with several midi channels? That's technically impossible, as it has no pass-through mode. That's why I suggested Multi-Instrument. you take the incoming notes (all on one channel) and split them for the individual instruments (e.g. keyrange)

If you can screenshot the crucial tweaking you did to get several channels out from one track, I might be able to provide better help.
