Moving the Studio One Document folder

I have a new install of Studio One 7 on a Mac Mini with a 512GB internal drive. The Studio Ine Docs folder is over 200GB. I have a 2TB external SSD. If I move the folder there will Studio Ine know where it’s plug-ins and other docs are? Will this effect performance terribly?

As long as the external is up to snuff speed-wise - should be good.

To make the move - with S1 running - make sure you have no songs or anything loaded.

Then head up to Studio One->Options and update your User content location to be the "new" folder on the external:

Studio One shouldn't balk at this - if it does - permit the new location and then exit S1

Then move everything from old location to new location.

Fire up S1 and it "should" act as if nothing happened.

I do know that Macs can be very touchy at times for file/folder structures, permissions and a host of other stuff - but on Windows - the above is how I do it and it works great every time.

Thank you for the step by step instruction. Why I Sequioa throws the trash out immediately is a mystery… i searched on line and have not found the answer to that one yet. Turned off / unchecjed boxes no difference. Sometimes I wonder if the programers / code writers are actual users or are just mean people!

The actual code writers do only what is best for Apple. Pretty sure none of them are Studio One users.

They have no skin in the game when it comes to your device, your experience or challenges with any of the software you run.

From Google: No, macOS Sequoia does not automatically empty the trash by default; items remain in the Trash until you manually empty them, though you can enable an automatic 30-day empty-from-Trash feature in Finder Settings or by enabling the "Empty Trash Automatically" option under General > Storage in System Settings to free up space. I am on Sequoia 15.6.1 My Trash items do Not empty automatically. Seems odd or something wrong if you can't turn it on / off as desired

Maybe it is just external drives that the files are deleted and don’t go in the trash like in older OSX versions… I will do a little trial and hopefully not error!

This whole upgrade thing was so I can detect transients and enhance the drum tracks on 7 of my tunes with midi or loop files. Then I want to use chord tracking to add some guitar lead harmonies to save time not having to add them live. I think my learning curve with the upgrade is pretty steep but I am thinking moving from Logic to Studio One there is a lot more on line video and user feedback.

In general, both Mac & Win OS's will permanently delete (from the drive TOC) any file on an EXTERNAL drive IF that drive is unmounted before attempting to restore the files from the trash. The data likely still exists on the external drive, but can only be recovered with special tools.

Since version 7 I have been working (more so) on very old recorded tunes to get them on the Grid properly (as you are) to add other Instruments. The Grid is so important for the time based Instruments. The videos online make it look easy but for me it's been a trial and error type thing. Sometimes very frustrating, sometimes very rewarding. The more I do the easier it seems to get.
Good luck with it all. Keep after it, good things will happen. 🖖

I haven't had any issues with an external drive deleting files on it's own. Here is some info that may help if you
have not read up on yet.
  • Per-Drive Trash Folder:
When you delete a file from an external drive, macOS doesn't put it in your main Trash. Instead, it creates a hidden .Trash folder on the external drive itself, and the file goes there.

  • Emptying the Trash:
The file is not permanently deleted until you empty this specific drive's Trash folder, and this action must be performed while the external drive is still connected to your Mac.

  • Permanent Deletion:
If you unplug the external drive before emptying its Trash, the files remain in the drive's Trash folder and will reappear on the drive when you plug it back in.
Why Files Might Disappear (Common Issues)
  • Drive Errors or File System Corruption:
An external drive with errors can behave erratically. Run a disk utility or check disk scan on your drive to identify and fix potential problems.

  • Incompatible File System:
If your external drive is formatted with a file system incompatible with macOS (like NTFS), you may encounter issues with deleting files.

  • Insufficient Free Space on the Drive:
For large numbers of deletions, the drive's specific Trash folder may not have enough space to store the files temporarily, leading to them disappearing.

  • Software Glitches or User Error:
Some users report files disappearing into the void, which could be a symptom of a software bug or an incorrect deletion method, especially with large file operations.
What to Do if Files Seem to Be Missing
  1. Connect the Drive: Plug the external drive back into your Mac.

  2. View Hidden Files: Use CMD + Shift + . (period key) to show hidden files, then look for the .Trash folder on your external drive.

  3. Empty the Trash: Open the .Trash folder and empty it to permanently delete the files, or restore them by moving them out of the folder.

  4. Check for Drive Issues: Use Apple's Disk Utility to check the drive's health for any errors.
