Solved MIDI in issues

Hi all

I'm having a baffling time trying to receive MIDI to an instrument from an external keyboard via my audio interface.

My audio interface is an Arturia 16 Rig. I previously had it working with Cakewalk with no issues.

The problem I'm having in Studio One is this: when I hook an external keyboard to my interface, I cannot get that keyboard to control a software instrument.

I am using a MIDI DIN lead from my keyboard into my interface. When I open the MIDI monitor in Studio One, I can see incoming notes when I hit keys on the keyboard. See screenshot:

So we know that MIDI note on/off is coming into Studio One, into the AF16Rig DIN 1 In.

However, when I set up an instrument track, that instrument does not receive MIDI from the external keyboard.

What does work:

• Playing notes on the instrument's virtual keyboard.
• Using a QWERTY keyboard in Studio One as the input/
• Drawing notes on the piano roll.
• A Keystep connected via USB to the computer (and set up as an external device in Studio 1).

So all of the above works. But in my setup, I want to use MIDI in from the 16Rig's DIN in. That's the only thing that doesn't work!

You probably have not setup a keyboard for the MIDI in of your interface. Studio One is very distinctive between keyboards (for midi signals into S1) and Instruments (for playback of MIDI signals). Lukas has an amazing explainer about this that should help you set up your rig correctly.

What does your External Devices tab look like? You can get to it from the main menu as Studio One | Options. My Korg M1 has the following entries:

And the track looks like this:

Also, can you please expand your track settings to show the full contents of the Instrument Output field?

Your replies helped me sort it out: I've set up a keyboard (in external devices0 to accept input from the 16Rig's MIDI DIN in. I called it "16 Rig Keyboard".

I set that keyboard to be the input for the instrument track and it works!

And this also lets me drive the virtual instrument in Studio One from my external sequencer, via the same MIDI DIN pathway. Perfect!
