I already had an issue back in 2022 with Studio One version 6 on my MacMini M1 where the GUI knobs of Native Instruments effect plug-ins (e.g. Flair, Freak, etc.) became very slow and practically unusable during playback. In April 2024, NI released updates that largely fixed this problem.
Now I’m experiencing the same issue again, not only with the effect plug-ins but also with the Kontakt 8 Player (all plug-ins and DAWs are on the latest versions).
I created a test project where the same instrument with the same patch (Hypha: Atlantis) is loaded in Kontakt 7 (full version) and Kontakt 8 (Player). Both are playing a short MIDI sequence. During playback, the controls in the Kontakt 7 GUI respond perfectly, while in Kontakt 8 they behave very erratically, depending on the Studio One / Studio One Pro version.
In Studio One v6 it’s still mostly okay, in Studio One v7 it becomes very jumpy, and in Studio One Pro v8 the controls almost only jump between minimum and maximum values.
As soon as playback is stops everything works perfectly again.
I’ve tested this in various configurations (buffer size down to 128, second monitor disconnected, using the internal MacMini speakers instead of my Behringer UMC202HD, graphics acceleration in Studio One on and off, efficiency cores on and off), but none of this makes any difference.
I also tested this in Cubase 14 with the exact same hardware and software setup, and there Kontakt 7 and Kontakt 8 behave equally well. I am exclusively using the VST3 versions of the plug-ins.
