MacBook built-in mic

I wanted to do some testing while travelling, chose the internal MacBook Pro Mic as input, headphones as output, armed a track and... nothing
Any idea how to get this to work?

Also note that your Macbook uses noise cancelling which suppresses 'far away' sources. You need to be close for a useable result.
