How do you install a third party midi effect in Studio One

I have got Unify and I am trying to install (Plugin Guru's) Show Midi. It is a midi effect. It needs to come before the instrument. Is this possible or is this something that Studio One still cannot do.

You can - it's just not as convenient as in other DAWs that directly support MIDI FX as inserts. You would load the MIDI effect as an instrument on it's own track. Then you can send MIDI data (from your MIDI controller/keyboard) to this effect and use another instrument track to receive MIDI data from this plug-in and send it to the instrument of your choice.

Except this midi effect is NOT an Instrument. It only appears as an EFFECT So how do you make that work.

No it does not. I guess this particular type of midi effect wont work within Studio One. I have contacted Plugin Guru as well so we will see what they say. It can be inserted after the instrument as an insert but it does not work or do anything.

@Jemusic

Just running the numbers, as a checkback about the way SO uses 3rd party midi inserts.

Two instrument tracks.
1, midi show insert
2, Vst inst of your choice

If you name the Instrument track "Show Midi" put the insert into that track, set that to monitor.
Then on your instrument track in the input dropdown is the "show Midi" available. If yes, select it.
Does the instument play and also receive mod wheel, pitch bend input, with both tracks monitoring.
If you now make some settings in Midi show do they pass through.

I assume this is this the way you have it set up, yes ?

Best rgards

From what I can see Studio One thinks this is an audio effect. (It works as a midi effect in other DAW's though) You cannot install it before an instrument. But you can after, and then Studio One thinks its an audio effect. And by the way sintil8 that setup only works if the what you put on the first track appears as an instrument to Studio One and it also has to output midi for that to work. Not all output midi either. So its limiting.

Its actually one of Studio One's poorer features. Firstly you should not need two tracks to do something like this either. With the Note FX for example, apart from the 4 options there already, there needs to be a fifth option where that opens up the effects tab and any 3rd party midi effect should be able to be inserted right there, before the instrument. Simple as that. Other DAW's can do it but Studio One has never been able to do it.

Yes you are right, if it is a midi FX, it defaults to an Audio track. Well that's a bummer.
I had based my checkback upon the way I use Scaler, which comes in two flavours an inst' and and FX insert.

You cannot put it into an insert slot on a midi/instrument track on it's own with no instrument.
Yes, about the lack of 3rd party midi inserts, would make for a far better approach and open up a lot of 3rd party midi inserts.

Most VSTs that generate or modify MIDI ship as an VST instrument or as both to get around that problem.

And, yep, being able to drop MIDI VSTs into the NoteFx slot would be sweet.

As Jemusic said a pre instrument slot or as you suggest NoteFx as long as it straightforward to instantiate in the Instrument channel.
Maybe it's a spanner in the works to program such a feature, Let's hope SO1 has it in the roadmap?

Now I remember why I've been spending money on H/W controllers. 🥹

Regards to all.

Hiya @Jemusic

Was ferreting about, as folk do, and came across this, and wonder whether you had seen this?

Scroll down to the downloads part...
There appears to be an alternative Instrument version, , is this of any use?

Edit; I need a new qwerty keyboard..Duh

Best regards, hope it works.

There used to be a MIDI FX standard that was championed by Steinberg and Cakewalk. Sadly, it was abandoned and I don't know why.

@Craig Anderton

Neither do I, maybe the hardware tech outgrew the software, Faster processors larger code 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit etc.
Maybe keeping a stranglehold on Vst as a patent, market share. Take your pick they are all part of the tapestry I imagine.
Just another glitch in the matrix we as users of this tech live with.

As you mention it have you seen what Namm president had to say...

Anyway, lets not hijack @Jemusic thread !

Be good if he can use the instrument version of the ModMate to achieve what he wants.

Regards

ModMate is very good and interesting. Super powerful. I have not installed it yet but will though. I am trying to install ShowMidi. A different app. It’s like a virtual keyboard that works with Unify but as it stands I can’t as currently it’s an effect only and they are not planning to update.

I guessed that might be what you were after, but wasn't sure. It was that you referenced PluginGuru and looking at the YTube link...

I wasn't sure if it was ModMate or ShowMidi.
Was it just the control functions or the midi data presented with Show midi, thought it worth posting just incase. No harm done though.

The idea of having a flexible midi Fx insert slot pre instrument would be an incredible feature IMHO but not as yet.
Pity they are not creating an Instrument flavour of ShowMidi. Bit of anti climax to a promising looking tool.

Oh well such is life.
