Was I wrong in believing that a license lasted the duration of the version? Say, up until the release of 9. It seems it's a yearly licence. Mine lasts until mid-June. What happens if the 8.5 is release after that, for example?
It's kind of like the waves update plan. You are eligible to get updates until a certain point in time, not until a certain version number anymore.
So, if version 8.5 drops after June in your case, you'll not be able to get it unless you extend your update plan.
Yep, they changed it with V8. They also reduced the update price so if you are used to buying an update every couple of years it's now a similar price to update each year, with the advantage that you don't have to if the updates are of no real interest to you. I may well skip the updates when mine runs out until something tempts me back in. Quite how long this pricing will continue is anyone's guess!
When you purchase a perpetual license, you get one year of included feature releases. This has been this way since 2024 with the release of Studio One Pro 7. Once that year is up, then you are locked in to whatever build you are on at that point. Then, when the next feature release comes along, if you want in on it, you have to purchase the upgrade. (Or the subscription.)
So, if you bought v7 and in the midst of your 1 year of feature updates, you got v8.0 for free, then you would have to purchase the upgrade to v8.1 if that was released outside of that 1 year of free updates.
