Fender Studio Pro 8 - Discussion Thread

He had a look of utter disgust clearly written on his face as he went through the presets
You and I really see the world differently.

VP

I couldn't give a damn about the name. I do give a damn about my S88 Mk3 not being able to control the DAW beyond very basic features - my old Nektar Panorama T6 does a far, far better job. I am disappointed that Fender have not updated the scripts to take advantage of the Native Instruments v2 firmware for the Kontrol S Mk3s; this would have been a good opportunity to do that. Other features of the new version I do really like, such as the chord arranger ('Scaler 3 lite'!) and the Channel Overview.
Exactly. If you're not going to make your own killer keyboards/keybeds, at least make an effort to support some of the leading manufacturer's keyboards. I'm a guitarist but don't record it much, I use keyboards now almost exclusively and would love more functionality with MIDI, MPE and Komplete Kontrol keys. I also don't need more ways to record a guitar when I do. I understand where Fender is coming from, but there's very little in it for me it seems. Going to start looking into a few other DAW's again while I continue to use STUDIO ONE 7.x for the near future. I may give the new Fender thing a test drive, but I'm not going to update until we know more about how well it works.

First you say "all plug-ins are updated", then you say "without any 3rd party plug-ins". Are 3rd party plug-ins involved or not?

This a two different crashes) in different situations )
and these are definitely not problems with plugins in both cases, however, explaining this to you is obviously useless) because I already went through this discussion a year ago) so I just suggest you just forget about me)

After you and VP weighed in with the polar opposite opinions, now I'll actually have to listen to it!

I should mention one other weird Fender anomaly I experienced recently. After too many years of guitar playing to count, I've come around that for me by far the most important thing of any guitar I'm considering purchasing is the way my left (fingering) hand fits with the neck profile. The color, maple or rosewood, the pickups, and the other hardware is all secondary at this point. I want to be able to easily make drastic note pulls and form unusual chords close to effortlessly. Toward the end of acquiring a Strat that aced those considerations, I must have tried literally hundreds of Strats of every ilk including dozens and dozens of custom shop variants costing up to $7,000. I've also over the years developed a belief that in the non-American Strat world, the Japanese ones were superior to the Mexican ones. Imagine my surprise when a visit to a Guitar Center led to me leaving with a Mexican Player II HSS on sale for $699. I literally had to try like a hundred Player IIs (I live in LA, so not hard) to find one that wasn't setup like crap. In fact it was set up ideally, which is why I bought it.

Then, a few days later, it occurred to me that the strings looked a little tarnished for a new guitar, even one that had been left out in the wild at Guitar Center. Upon further examination, I determined from looking at the ball ends that the strings weren't the Fender strings that were supposed to come with the guitar. It had seemed almost too well set up, as though someone paid for a pro job, compared to every other one I played. Although I didn't want to return the guitar since it was a dream fit for my fretting hand, I thought I should at least get a discount for them selling me a used guitar. Cutting to the chase, the manager told me they're actually allowed to sell Fender guitars that have already been sold and returned with 45 days as new! He did send me home with a three pack of strings to placate me. That's one strange policy.

Honestly?

I'm less upset about the name change, I've been expecting it for a long time now...
The real disappointment is how underwhelming the release itself is.
There are precisely 0 new features or improvements that interest me as a music producer/mix engineer.
The proof is in the pudding as they say, and the pudding is bland.
19 months to come up with a new full product version with essentially nothing new to offer is profoundly disappointing.

What's obvious is that Fender occupied the development team's time and energy to effect this 'transition', rather than build/refine the featureset of the DAW... but this is cutting off your nose to spite your face. I'd have MUCH preferred a longer wait if it meant having some actual features that are useful to a professional.

Do you like not knowing what will open when you double-click, the channel overview or the mixer? Because that's exactly how it works for me now unpredictably. sometimes it open mixer, sometimes channel overview ,sometimes both))

It's probably also a 3D party plugin issue, in an empty project with empty tracks.
:D
I do everything on the Mac--currently macOS "Sonoma" 14.7.2 on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019): and I am not seeing this.

If I double-click on a Channel in the Mixer, the Channel View appears, which is nice.

If I double-click on a Track on the left-side of what I call the "Track Lane", then the Channel View appears.

On the Mac, these are new behaviors and were not in PreSonus Studio One Pro 7.2.3. I like them! (y)

[NOTE: I use a somewhat different set of names for the various GUI sections;, and I tend to map everything to the way recording studio "boards" were configured perhaps half a century ago. In no small way, this is due to making an effort to avoid reading official reference guides. I call the things with the LED volume sliders "Channels", but colloquially I call them "Sliders". The "Track Lane" name comes from reminding me of a bowling alley; but mostly I consider it to be a visual representation of tracks on magnetic tape except vastly superior. ]

Okay - in that case, we would need more details if you’re looking for meaningful help.

and these are definitely not problems with plugins in both cases
Please understand that without concrete details I can only go by experience. In most cases users are convinced their issue is definitely not plug-in related and after investigating further, it still turns out to be a plug-in issue in the vast majority of cases. That's why I use terms like "likely" or "usually" and ask for specifics such as plug-ins involved and steps to reproduce the issue.

however, explaining this to you is obviously useless, because I already went through this discussion a year ago, so I suggest you just forget about me
In that case, there's probably not much I can do to help.

Had a cool mid 80's Japan rosey board0 (in the mid 80's) but one day in 1991 I stumbled across a used 1987 American Vintage Series '57 (in Ocean Turquoise no less) complete with the circa 57 case, all the candy, the tags, the this and the that - and well - there was no turning back.

To this day - it feels like it was made just for me. Have never come across another one like it - but have tried many both close to (and far away from) that year. It was one of the early ones and they simply do not make them like that anymore.

Funny how that works...

Is this the situation you're referring to or is this a different issue?
Thanks Lukas. You're right, I'm referring to this issue. Now I understand why it's there and what it's good for. I just never noticed it in Studio One Pro 7, but maybe I have overlooked it.

But how about the solo button? Is the strange behaviour intentional too?

I'll put it on my list to take a look at. I need a bit of a break after 13 hours of supporting the Studio Pro 8 release.

Go rest. Tomorrow is another day.

And LTSC is now a no-go zone for v8 as well.

Best to stand pat over there.

Wow, interesting. Microsoft has their fingers in everyone's pie now I guess.

Fortunately it won't impact me in the slightest... guess I'm on 6.6.4 until the end of time.

Thanks for the heads up.

One thing I've just found is that there is a boatload of new free stuff in your MyFender account to download and add to v8. Pretty decent stuff, too.

Figured as much. :)

I tried to get my copy of Eventide Shimmerverb going - but it's iLok and while I have had my iLok account for years - no dice trying to get that going.

Support ticket sent...

Can the Channel Overview be detached? I can see great benefits from moving it to my secondary monitor, a touchscreen
Yes, on the Mac. :)

Lukas

I don't mean to sound mean or arrogant, but perhaps your answers are aimed at inexperienced users, which I am not. Over 30 years of working with various DAWs, and about the same amount of time as an audio production engineer and advanced PC user, I know very well which plugins can crash a DAW and when. Moreover, I can open windbg and analyze the dump from the DAW.
(Which I've done more than once, and almost always figured out which plugin is causing the problem.)
Furthermore, you mistakenly think I'm asking for help here. I'm simply recording some points so that other users are aware, and it's up to them to decide whether to pay attention to my posts or not.
In any case, I'm grateful for your attempts to help.
I'm sure everything described in this thread will be fixed (just as what was fixed with buggy 7.0 release )
I'll just continue working quietly on 7.2.3 until 8.1 - 8.2 comes out)
But that doesn't change the fact that this is an extremely controversial and questionable release from many perspectives.
In any case, thank you. I hope you understand me correctly.

Does anyone know if any of the 23 included Sound Sets were new or updated snd therefore need to be installed/reinstalled?

Figured as much. :)

VP
Honestly they haven't added the features many of us wanted/requested in the last 15 months, if they continue going down that road there will be 0 practical reason for me to upgrade.

I just watched Lukas's intro video;

The Arrangement overview and metronome subdivisions are good -- that last one has been a FR for a LONG time by many users.

So, credit where credit is due and all, there's those two things. I have no need for a new reverb or sampler update, I'm set with my 2,000-odd plugins and VIs.
