Faderport Classic - footswitch

Today for the first time ever I plugged in a M Audio Sustain pedal into a Faderport Classic, to see if it works, and it does with 8.0.2

Without any assigned commands to the footswitch, the default behaviour seems to be:
1) The first time I press it transport starts
2) The second time I press it transport records.
I can't get it to stop via the pedal.

Has anybody managed to configure any other behaviour (BTW I know how to assign commands), for instance:

Start, stop (and no record) - 2 presses
Start, stop and rewind to where playback started - 3 presses.
Start, stop, record and rewind to where playback started - 4 presses.

Any foot switch pros out there?

No programming advice but I do know that pedals can be peculiar, and pedal inputs can be too. Pedals can be 'push to close' or 'push to open' or latching, sometimes with a switch to choose between options. And inputs can behave differently depending on if the pedal is plugged in before or after the device is switched on (I had Yamaha keyboards with this behaviour). So know what you're dealing with before diving into the programming.

It was always a long shot.

The other thing, which is definitely not your problem but is worth knowing, lots of hardware boxes with pedal inputs try to autosense the polarity by assuming that the pedal is not pressed when the box is powered up. It usually works well until the day when something is resting on the pedal or when you've plugged it into the wrong input...

Right, I've also got a polarity switch on this one.
