External sync issue

So I'm experiencing this curious case where I have external software (Dorico) outputting timecode via TXL Timecode. I use a loopMidi port. Here's my main use case:
  • Start Playback in sync source (Dorico)
  • Expected: Studio One starts synced to TXL Timecode plugin via loopMidi, both Dorico and Studio One outputs to my Focusrite
  • What happens:
    • Studio One does start correctly at the right position and follows the timecode, confirming that midi sync channel is correctly set up
    • However: Studio One refuses to play any midi from my tracks in this Sync mode - so no sound
  • Here's the kicker: during this playback, if I click the Sync button in Studio One to turn it off, Studio One immediately starts playing back. In other words, I know the audio routing is set up correctly.
  • Another kicker: if I play any VST instrument on my midi controller while playing back in sync mode, i hear the sounds perfectly - again confirming that the audio routing is working.
To summerise: midi input from a midi controller works in this synced mode, but playing the midi from tracks does not.... MOST of that the time: If I press record or open an instrument, notes are sent and picked up. It's not audio cutting in and out, because the notes (and reverb) are ringing out nicely.

Is this just another instance of MMC / MTC not being processed correctly in S1 or could the ack of playback in this mode be due to something else. I appreciate any pointers and life-hacks you may have.

Welcome to the forum,

I’ve moved this to a new thread since it wasn’t related to the other discussion, which was already two months old. Please create a new thread for any new discussions or issues.
A reply seemingly got deleted in the transfer, it seems 😕

@sintil8 I received your reply via mail notification. You ended the reply with "You may need to resort something like the device below.". In the email it was a block stating [embedded media]. Would you mind restating what the you were referring to?

Thanks!

Sure, however I was responding in general to the OP and sync timing SPP and and MTC SMPTE and not specifically just to you!

You might be able to get to a synced system by sending a start message from SO1 to an external clocking device. That device controls the Song Pointer Position.
But my experience was with dedicated hardware and I'm not too sure that it would work. It's a bit of a suck it and see situation.
More in depth research and emails to companies for advice would be my follow up suggestion...?

Anyway this was the device I mentioned...

LTC info...

This is a complex subject and is probably beyond my pay grade. Which was why I removed the post after it was moved.

Best of regards, hope this might help.

@sintil8 Haha, many apologies about assuming the reply was for me. I thought I made a good decision in posting to a existing thread, but it seams I caused a good amount of confusion 😀

😀😆🤣

Maybe someone with the the right tech knowledge will provide a solution, it sounds to me like SO1 needs a specific form of time code?

Good luck hope you can get things playing nicely together.

Regards

Edit: questions you might want to think about sharing...
Can you record midi whilst Sync mode is switched on and running ?
and when you say Midi files do not play back, were those files recorded whilst not running in Sync mode?

$110 also includes a clock source...

Again best regards
