I recently scored a great deal on a NOS 1818VSL. I'm VERY familiar with the VSL
family. In any case, I went to Presonus.com to grab the most recent drivers for this unit which is stated
as Universal Control v4.7.0.106978. Then I made the mistake of installing it......BAD MOVE. The drivers
installed but when the 1818 was connected I got a prompt to update the firmware. REALLY bad move.
The new firmware BRICKED the 1818. I then went online and, as I suspected, I am not alone in this
situation.......MANY user reported the same results. Fortunately, as I bought my first 1818VSL when they
were initially released. I have EVERY driver ever written for this device including some "non-official"
drivers as I was a Forum Mod and beta tester at the time. In any case, I was able to use older pre-UC
drivers VSL driver 1.1.3 to rollback the firmware and get the unit to sync again. Hopefully, this will help
other users that find themselves in this deplorable and frustrating position.
I believe it's incredibly irresponsible to release drivers with firmware update that will BRICK
your interface. I guess maybe they just want get you to buy a new one.....not a very good sales
pitch IMHO.
