I think many current CLAP plugins are just the VST stuck into a CLAP wrapper, mostly because someone made that wrapper freely available. So companies can quickly get to market with a CLAP version but, of course, that version has none of the benefits of CLAP. It's very much like when VST3 started. Companies just wrapped the VST2s up in a VST3 wrapper. Many are still like that and have not implemented the optional and beneficial features that VST3 offers over VST2 like multiple MIDI i/o and CPU saving.
So whilst CLAP might look brilliant on paper the actual implementation may not be so different to VST in many cases. Time will tell but remember that the best technical solution does not always win. Anyone else old enough to remember Betamax vs VHS? Betamax was technically the best solution but lost out to marketing. If CLAP does not gain enough of a foothold at both ends of the game (Host and Plugin) then it will not become the standard.
