Advice requested on total UI hang

While I have found S! official support helpful and responsive in the past, I thought I would first ask the community here about my current issue.

Is there a useful way to pin down the underlying cause of a S1 UI total hang? It frequently becomes unresponsive and has to be killed. Are there any useful diagnostic logs that I haven’t discovered? I know I can make a dump file and analyse that with a debugger, but there are far too many threads to easily identify what may be “unusual”.

The problem could arise from the RapidComposer VST on a track. It’s an interesting piece of software but has been flaky in the past. Can a suspect VST hang S1 without crashing?

Alternatively, the problem might come from me flitting between control surfaces (IoStation, NI S49 Mk3, and thinking about adding stream Deck).

Any and all advice would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Which computer OS are you using? In my experience, Studio One doesn't hang without help from plugins. Try blacklisting RapidComputer VST and creating a couple demanding demo projects...see what happens.

I don't flit among control surfaces, but I often use many simultaneously, and that hasn't caused any problems.

Thanks for this reply. I also strongly suspect RapidComposer as being at fault. I will raise a query over at its support forum. It is a very interesting piece of software and one which I hoped to play with in depth. But, despite its ambition and scope, it is a one-man development and that is not always a good recipe for robustness and interoperability. Maybe I should use it stand-alone, dragging Midi into S1 or playing via loopMidi. I am sure I can find a mode of working that doesn't lose my entire DAW session.

I am glad to hear that multiple control surfaces are not an issue. I currently have the S49 Mk3, ioStation, two S1 Remote instances and I am trialling Stream Deck Mobile on a couple of old phones. "Indecision" must be my middle name!!

And it was a good question about OS. I have updated my signature to add "Windows 11"
