8.2 Crashes when Instrument Track is created

I recently updated to Fender Studio Pro 8.2 and started experiencing repeated crashes whenever I tried to create external instrument tracks.

When creating a new external instrument track, if I select an external instrument in the Add Tracks window before clicking OK, Studio Pro immediately crashes.

The Workaround:

  1. Open the Add Tracks window.
  2. Create an instrument track without selecting an external instrument.
  3. Once the track has been created, assign the external instrument to the track.

What is an "External Instrument"?

What is an "External Instrument"?

Hardware Synthesizers, configured in the Settings and available in the browser under “Instruments —> External Instruments“.

Might be a stupid question: why don’t you drag the external instrument straight from the browser into the arranger view? This instantly creates a new instrument track.

This.

That still doesn't explain why a workflow option that has worked for years all of a sudden crashes the program.
Well - it also might be a bug too. Have you filed a ticket? V8.2.0 has only been out since Tuesday.

You also did not specify what instruments are giving you a hassle. All of them? Some of them? Details matter.

That's why I was posting to see if anyone was having that same issue. We all work different. I understand you drag your external instrument from the browser into the arranger view. I use a stream deck so my shortcuts are mapped to the stream deck (and yes I removed the stream deck from the equation to make sure it wasn't an issue on that end). The reason I posted was for people who may work like me.

I submitted a ticket and all external instruments are crashing my program. VST's are in fine.

Until you tell us exactly what instruments you are working with and exactly - step by step - you actually introduce them to a session - no one will know if they work like you or with a specific instrument like you

Do ANY of your externals work - or are all of them causing FSP to crash?

It’s every single one of not sure what I can to communicate any clearer. But I press T to create a new instrument track and select any one of my 15 keyboards and samplers via midi interface. As soon as I select, the program crashes. Even if I disconnect the midi interface and all of my instruments it still crashes when I create a new track. I have been using studio one since v3. This is clearly a 8.2 issue.

What OS are you using? Any chance you kicked MIDI 2 into gear here?

That was just introduced in v8.2 but could be problematic just the same.

I’m running macOS 26.4.1 on an M4 Pro Mac mini.
I haven’t done anything outside of installing the update to turn on any MIDI 2.0.
It’s weird because issue only occurs when I select an external instrument while creating a new track. If I create the track first and assign that same instrument afterward, everything works normally.

Yes but how do you actually know the Mac OS is not trying to use MIDI 2 by default?

I have read numerous posts from Logic users who were unaware MIDI2 was on until they got caught crashing in Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol etc. only a flip back to MIDI 1 fixed issues.

But the problem isn't whether MIDI 1.0 or MIDI 2.0 works. It's why one particular sequence of actions causes Studio Pro 8.2 to crash.

FWIW, I'm dragging in instruments by the boatload and have not experienced a crash from the new update (or ever).
Best you create a ticket at this point.

Had someone verified a similar issue, then you'd know. At this point, up to what I've read so far, its only happening on your end.

That’s what @getatnard03 already confirmed. Plugins are working fine for him. It’s only external Instruments that are failing this way. Maybe some oversight when implementing MIDI 2 in the configuration files for external hardware. Who knows…

Edit: btw - you speak of “dragging in”. That’s what I suggested and seemingly works. According to the OP it’s the specific way of creating a new track via dialog, then selecting external instruments from the dropdown menu that causes the crash.

If these externals are using MIDI as you noted - then it does matter in a big way whether it works if not.
