What are the options for saving controller assignments?

I'm missing something. Every time I create a new song, I have to re-assign controller knobs to virtual instruments or effects plugins. I'm sure I'm missing the solutions for the ways it might be possible to assign controllers to a virtual instrument, for example, and then recall those settings in a new song.

What are the options for doing this? Thanks!

thanks Trucky... I've seen those videos and they're helpful, but I'm still not seeing how to reliably save controller links so they automatically are attached when opening a new song. I've tried saving the track with the instrument in it to the browser but that doesn't seem reliable either. I'll keep experimenting and see what I can come up with. There has to be a way.
