Solved Unable to add external device

Unable to add ANY type of external device - After selecting the appropriate options, when I select OK, the newly added device does not show in the list.

- if you check this video by gregor, after clicking OK, the new item shows up - that doesnt work for me.

As a workaround, i edited the musicdevices.settings file to make a duplicate for my midi keyboard and drumpad (keyboard + control surface) - But this time I need to add a new externam instrument and dont know how I can use this workaround for

you didn’t include your system specs, even though the forum panel specifically asks for them when posting about issues. Without that information, we don’t know whether you’re on Windows, macOS (or Linux).

If a newly created device does not appear after clicking OK, the first thing that comes to mind is a problem with file permissions. Studio One needs to write to the .settings file where external devices are stored, and if it can’t, the device won’t be saved.

Check that your user account has read/write access to this folder.

If permissions are fine and the problem persists, try renaming or deleting musicdevices.settings while Studio One is closed. A fresh version will be created at the next startup, which often resolves corruption issues.
 
Thanks Lukas - and my bad - MY machine is a Mac, mini m4, running on sequoia 15.6. I am using S1 6.5.1 -

And thanks for the suggestion - I tried deleting the file with S1 closed and it auto created on next boot, but I was still not able to add the device. Interestingly, I am unable to create ANY device (keyboard or control surface) as well. Do i have to re-install S1 to fix this?
 
Studio One requires some security privileges too, like access to the 'microphone' and to the documents folder. You can check the settings under your Mac's System Preferences / Security&Privacy / Privacy.

It's worth a try, but since I don't know what the actual problem is, it's hard to say whether this will help. Aside from a corrupted settings file, a file permission issue (where the file can't be created or modified) seems the most likely cause to me.

I do have access to the MIC and document folder (i can create new music with my midi keyboard and save new projects)

I will wait to see if there are any other suggestions before I try to re-install.

Just to make sure: The Studio One app requires those access rights too, not just the user. Simply check that Privacy tab.
