Sustain and the Piano Roll: Studio Pro 8

When drawing in MIDI notes, Studio Pro 8.0.1 doesn't behave like any DAW I've ever used with regards to sustain. Am I missing some kind of additional process in Studio Pro?

All of my notes are very short, regardless of how long I draw them in. Again, these are drawn, not played. Instrument seems to have no bearing. I've tried Lounge Lizard 4, Rhodes Anthology, Arturia Analog Lab, etc.

This is frustrating and unexpected. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have a snap setting or auto quantize set. It is not normal behaviour by default. I’ve never changed the default settings and I can draw and length I want.

Are talking about playback of an existing instrument part with notes you have drawn in?

Of course, that’s absolutely not normal. Notes should sound exactly as long as they are shown in the Piano Roll — especially if this happens with different instruments. Does this occur in multiple sessions or in all of them?
Usually, anomalies like this happen when notes are recorded via MIDI and the Note On messages are triggered multiple times (for example due to an incorrect MIDI controller configuration in Studio One). However, this should not happen when you draw notes directly into an Instrument Part.
In theory, it could also be caused by a shared (ghost) copy of an Instrument Part that is perfectly layered on top of the original one on the same track, which would result in the notes being sent multiple times to the instrument. That said, this is not very easy to do accidentally, so it’s rather unlikely.

You could also try using a MIDI Monitor (instrument) plug-in that logs incoming MIDI Note On/Off events. This would help determine whether duplicate notes are being sent from Studio Pro to the instrument.

Any note drawn or clicked and hold have an automatic timeout of 1 second. This strange behavior was often discussed but was never changed despite requests.

The note editor (action items included) has quite a few small annoyances and bugs. I'll probably make a list of bugs once I update to version 8 after the next bug fix release.

Thank you for all the replies. I went through all of the steps in the video (Lukas) - no luck. I confirmed that the length shows 1 bar as expected for each note. I don't see any additional midi events. And, just to clarify, these are drawn notes, not played. Also, a new revelation, as the playback is looping around, the notes cut off together at various lengths - sometimes 1/8, sometimes 1/16, sometimes 1/4, always random.

I started over completely, restarting the pc, and redoing the midi. This time I added Fender/ Presonus instruments. They played without issue. I tried the others again - no luck. All Rhodes, btw. Maybe it's something with the sustain implementaion that's unique to achieving an authentic Rhodes sound. Reaching, I know. Added u-he Diva - it played perfectly.

Still not sure what's happening with Arturia, Rhodes, and Lounge Lizard. If it matters, the Arturia VSTi makes use of a Presonus provided license, the other two are separate purchases.

This is a Windows 10 box with latest/ last updates, Fender Studio Pro 8.0.1, SSD, 64gb ram. I have an Atom SQ controller but it was not active or in use.

I guess this problem is partially solved. Thanks again everyone.

I just tested this with a few different Rhodes VST's. Most only sustain for about 2 measures Of course it also depends on how hard you hit the note.
None of them cut off they just slowly fade away.
One really basic EP called Electrix by Sampleson sustained un naturally. Those are usually the ones where Sample is real short and then a loop gets played to cover the sustain. They never sound right.

The Lounge Lizard is one of my Favorites but I think I haven't activated it outside of Sonar. I just noticed that it loads but doesn't make sound. I do have a license for it somewhere.

And yes as Jens said if you click on a note it only plays for a second. That is a bit annouying.

But I have no problems with notes not playing exactly as drawn. That would not be very good and would have been fixed with version 0.
