How can I use 8x8 or another pad to launch clips on the new S7 launcher ?

Hi

I see video on youtube

Using The New Launcher in Studio One Pro 7 with ATOM Controller! | PreSonus

with the atom controller with 4x4 pads it work. I try with my midi keyboard use all octaves i can with octave +/- switch, and i can not start clips from launcher. what midi message the atom pad controller send ?. to use the launcher, better my plan is to use in future a launcher pad with 8x8 grid

I think in studio one 7 is a window need that show launcher pads in a 4x4 or 8x8 grid and the bank switches and the name of the clip. Then be able to define a midi key to trigger it

Welcome to the Forum!

You can submit a Feature Request for those features at the following site...
Studio One Pro Feature Requests

The device files for ATOM in Studio One can be opened in a text editor to learn how it works with the Launcher.

Also I'd recommend that you check out all the keyboard shortcuts in Studio One that are specific to the Launcher.

I asked a similar question about using a Novation Launchkey, which has 8x2 pads which I'd love to use to launch clips in the launcher like it does in Ableton.

It does not look like there are any MIDI note or CC commands that can do this so each controller needs a built-in script in S1. Novation LaunchPad Mk3 controllers, which are 8x8, do have such a script but I have not yet found anyone who can confirm how well clip launching works with those devices, if at all.

The launcher is something I have been wanting in S1 for a long time (it finally convinced me to upgrade from V4!) and it would be brilliant if Presonus could come up with a way for us to launch clips with any controller and to do that they need to support launching by CC or MIDI note. There are so many suitable controllers out there from Novation, Akai and more.

Of course, Presonus may be planning to make an 8x8 Atom SQ XL so maybe they don't want to support rival products!

it is really bad, that only presonus hardware work for scenes, because the atom have only a 4x4 grid and the atom SQ have 2X16 . all is outdatet. for good enough minimum is at least a 5x5 matrix .

with studio one there is a midi monitor when click on midi symbol. so anybody which have a atom can start scene or cells and do screenshot of midi output in midi monitor

with the atom device xml, i did not see how this work. i search for cell and scene in the file.

The details are in the Atom Javascript files but I have not been able to make much sense of them. I think it would be very difficult to adapt them without insider knowledge or documentation. Novation told me that Presonus wrote the scripts for the Launchpad Mk3 range. I don't think the MIDI monitor idea will work as they are probably using a second MIDI connection for control stuff and using bespoke messages.

maybe there is some documentation how write a script for a midi controller for studio one support and a simple example script, so i know the instruction to send midi messages ?. somewhere need a line in source that send output. in the .js is also nothing usefull. the midi monitor in s1 show all midi channels. I assume the cell and launcher control need another midi channel. in ableton channel 1 is for notes when play music and channel 2 is for the cell selection. I switch my midi keyboard to channel 1 channel 2 channel 3 and send a c-2 no cell or scene is start.

Check out the following PDF attachment If you're looking for 3rd party devices that support a 8x8 grid for the Studio One 7 Launcher.

Studio One 7 includes the device files to support these.

I really dont see the need to have any matrix to the clip launch have to match identically to a 4x4, 8x8, or whatever pattern. Only because any number of tracks or event selections brought into the clip launch will vary. Also, hardware will always have some limitation. That said, it would be nice for existing Atom users to have some kind of firmware upgrade that accommodates the new clip launch feature. The really well thought out products such as photographic hardware do exactly that. Its very big with customer loyalty. That little extra room for expandability can mean a lot.

I've used the Atom SQ with the clip launcher, and its pretty cool, but the selections have to be designated, and it may not be to everyone's liking. But if you'd want perhaps some 5x5, or 8x8 layout, you'll have to set your patterns to match how you position clips. And ultimately buy that piece of gear.

I'm still hoping to find a vid of someone demonstrating/reviewing the Novation Launchpads with the S1 launcher. That might sway me to buy one.
I probably don't need 8x8 but 4x4 is definitely not enough. Of course, anything targeted at Ableton will be 90 degrees out for S1, because Ableton session "tracks" are in columns not rows. As ever, you never quite find the perfect controller....

The firmware for ATOM and ATOM SQ already supports the new clip launch feature.

Thanks Trucky. I knew the Atom SQ was updated right away with version 7. I didn't know the Atom was now as well. So I take it, from the OP, pads need a defined midi key to trigger? Sort of difficult understanding. I'd think that already exists. No?

It's much more complicated than that as these controllers are designed to support multiple modes (Impact XT, Launcher, etc.) and functionality.
You can assign buttons on a keyboard controller (using MIDI Learn) to any of the Launcher commands but you'll not get very far with a limited number of buttons. For those really interested in creating device files, I'd recommend reading the ATOM, ATOM SQ & Novation Launchpad PDF manuals. Then check out all the device files included with Studio One 7 (especially the surface.xml files) for those controllers as a resource for creating your own.

I can confirm it work. I have nothing change in firmware, only plug it in and choose the device in studio on. a video i can upload later. when press the left 1. key in the session row it output this midi message. In is what come from the LP mini. out is what is send to the device. it show light correct, do blink to start at next bar(i choose bar quantize) . maybe it is important to send velocity 127 to start a scene. this my keyboard reach not. you can test if you can start a scene with your hardware, or it is maybe inside the device files mapped in studio. there can nothing edit in the device GUI studio one have. the mini mk3 have no velocity sensivity . this should keep in mind.I need no vel sens because on pads i can not playvel sens. i have the idea in the user mode i can define keys 2 octaves vel 50 and 2 octaves vel 100. vel 127 is mostly not usefull

I talked with Novation Support and they confirmed that the Launchpad series of products work as expected using the device files included with Studio One Pro 7.

They also recommended watching the following video that highlights the differences between the series of Launchpad products.

Thanks, but that's not the same as someone showing it with the S1 Launcher.
How does the row vs column thing work?
Can you navigate around a huge launcher grid with the controller?
Do the stop/solo/mute pads work in launcher?

And the most important question of all is: what does not work as well in S1 compared with using it in Ableton? I've had quite a few controllers over the years that did not quite deliver everything I thought they would.

@Davey is looking for someone showing how the Launchpad works with the Launcher in Studio One Pro 7.
@user1 - Did you make a video and upload it somewhere yet?

If so, here's his list of questions for how it works...

I have not done a video. his questions are good, so know later what i should show in video.

Yes you can do this with the cursor keys on top of the pad. but every time you press a cursor key, it shift 1 colum or row. so if you want scroll 8 rows need press 8 times the cursor key. I think this should enhance so it scroll 8 rows . compare with ableton live i can not do. how is this handle in ableton ?

Do the stop/solo/mute pads work in launcher?

you can stop or start clip in cells. the grid is 8x7. the lowest line start always scenes. you can switch with stop solo mute button down right on the pad between clip launch and track mute mode. start stop or record can do when in session mode. when in play note mode(drums,keys or user) button mode, this do not work. there is a novation components app so you can edit the pads in this 3 play modes.

this currently did not work, the app did not find the pad. they suggest use no hub. so i need more testing without hub.

The thing that should be enhance is that there can not program a velocity for the pads. they all play with 127. to get this maybe can do in studio one a track usw for other track as input that have mid message scaler plugin.

Novation should enhance their software that can choose a velocity for the pad, or for vel sensitive models choos a velocity range

the novation component app work without the pad, so you can test yourself. it is also possible to create

let me know if you have more questions.

the problem that with cursor keys can scroll only 1 cell or row per keypress can solve with this java script edit. I change the 1 to 4 in the lines. this scroll 4 cells 4 rows also in the track mute/solo/record mode. it do 4 tracks per keypress scroll. in file launchpadcomponent.js this scroll 4 . i think 4 is great to scroll.

let rowOffset = this.launcherHandler.getRowOffset();
this.launcherHandler.setMappingMode(mode);
this.launcherHandler.setRowOffset(rowOffset);

the launchpad Component App can find my pad now also on USB HUB. problem was, there need USB driver install, which i have done. the driver did not tell that should reboot. so i guess this can work without reboot. I try then a windows reboot and i can create and save custom mode 3 . I have done this for usefull stuff. I create in 1. row a horizontal unipolar slider with controller #1 for modulation . in the second row i have some controller buttons defined to control studio one(play/stop toggle,record). I need add a new device surface for this and create what studio one should do with the macro attach to buttons feature. in the other rows i have 5 octave with scale dorian. i like this scale most and many famous songs use that. I can now press user button to play notes. the drums and key modes also can edit so all in all there are 3 custom presets that can use.

all in all i am happy with the launch pad, it is important to have 8x8 cells. complete happpy and to use it as a replacement for midikeyboard(with white black keys) i might be when it is able to select velocity range for the note scale lines i create. then i can use 3 octaves in dorian scale with vel 50 and 3 octaves with vel 100.
