Convert audio drum track to MIDI

I’m on Studio One Pro V5 and I have the full version of Melodyne.

I’d like to convert one stereo drum track (not split out into kit components unfortunately) into MIDI data and then try various drum kits in EZ Drummer 3. I’ve tried using Melodyne on the drum audio track, and different Melodyne algorithms, then exporting the MIDI but I’m not getting good results. I’ve got the EZ Drummer track mapped to the Modern kit.

Is there a good way to do this without a lot of manual intervention?

Thanks

You already have all you need - with the Bandmate tab in EZD3 - just drag the WAV file into Bandmate and watch the fun happen:

Unfortunately in my case this does not work. I have an entire drum track of three or four minutes and Bandmate just loads on repeated groove

Yeah - I do not think any tool out there (except maybe Tracker within Superior Drummer 3) will be able to convert multiple minutes of a given file.

Bandmate is ideal for short bits - which I simply manipulate in the DAW after conversion.

End of the day - anything is better than trying to do this manually.

I'd recommend Waves InTrigger Drum Replacer for what you're trying to do...

Waves InTrigger Drum Replacer

Check out the video tutorials and try a demo of it to see it in action.

Drum audio to MIDI is a tough one but there are a bunch of drum replacer apps available. Look to Drumagog or UVI Drum Replacer.

Check out this guy's youtube channel... he might be able to help you with the EZDrummer side of things... he posts on a Reddit too.

Of course, ymmv, but it might be worth a try...

The issue with drum replacements is mostly with the hi hats and cymbals.
They seem to be able to fish out the kick and the snare possibly because those are up front and mostly have a steady pitch and dynamics.

Tom’s are also easy to detect.

But then the cymbals are all over the frequency spectrum and impossible to detect. Not only that there is a wide range of dynamics involved.

If you think about how a stereo drum track is recorded and mixed you see that the kick, snare and Tom’s are not only directly miked but they are equally as loud in the overhead mikes. Then there’s the room ambiance involved.

if you have ever tried listening to the drum track from stem separation process you will hear a lot of phasing going on.

This is sort of what will happen with drum separation software.

If you actually find replacement software that goes beyond the kick and snare let us know.

In the end I found the quickest solution was to simply play along with the original entering the parts on my keyboard controller.
Just d it in passes. Kick snare first, then hats and ride then Tom and cymbals.

Yes that makes sense to me. In the end, I stitched EZ Drummer grooves together, spent awhile editing it and came up with a track I was happy with. Not the same thing the drummer played, but it works just fine. And, I was able to extract the exact and naturally variable BPM of the original track thanks to Studio One’s inbuilt magic.
