App to transfer Cakewalk CWP to S1.

I have had no problem reconstructing my Sonar projects in S1 by simply exporting them as first a Midi file and then stems for the audio.
But I think I saw a while ago where someone had made an App that allows S1 to open a CWP file?
Possibly this is easier.

Yes, there was a thread about this a while ago :-)

I should have remembered that it was good old Alexey. ( azslow3) Thanks for this.
Not that I think I’m brave enough to try it now I see what is involved.
I don’t think I’d be any further ahead.
My projects are very simple and mostly midi based so that transfers over 100%.

Im just producing a video to show all the Cakewalk people who have now been basically screwed over how they can switch to S1 like me so was hoping for something like this that was a no brainer. I feel sorry for the people who were blindsided by this latest move by Bandits. Whoops, auto correct just made a joke. I typed Bandlab! Too funny 😂

While using azslow3's converter utility certainly isn't as easy as just having S1 be able to open a .cwp file, the procedure does work quite well and it can be streamlined quite a bit by creating a script in the form of a .bat file. In the long run, it probably would be a big time saver for most people wanting to convert their Cakewalk projects to S1.

Let me know if you'd like to see an example of the script and some further information.

In my experience, cwp2song.exe has been very useful in helping me to convert old Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 wrk files to S1 song files. I have over 6000 wrk files, many of which are from my studies of Arnold Schoenberg, Walter Piston, Cecil Forsyth... I used Cakewalk to play all of the examples and assignments in each book.

Here's how I have been converting these old files to S1 songs. First, I open the wrk file in CbB and save it as a cwp file. Then I copy the cwp file to the cwp2song folder and run the converter to get a song file. If I find myself needing a bunch of those files, then I might make a batch file or other script.

As for the converter, I never used Cakewalk for audio, so I can't comment on that aspect. I was mainly interested in the midi data, tempo, meter and key changes, markers, and chords. Only the chords are not converted, and I don't think that they can be in all cases.

CW allows almost any free text in a chord name, and I often used CW chords and expressions for various forms of analysis, such as Roman numeral, motivic, functional, etc. Maybe Notion provides a way to accomplish this. I don't know as I have never used it.

Another problem with chords is that CW allowed a different chord on each track. I can't see any way to do that with S1.

Many thanks to azslow3!

May I ask why you didn’t simply save the project as a midi file?

I find that midi files are universal to all Daw’s.
A midi type 1 file will not only contain all note, system exclusive, program , bank , channel and controller data it also will contain the tempo map as well as up to 127 characters in the tracks title box.
If the song was a GM midi compilation it will even play in Windows media player.

I sometimes use that method, too, especially when I have had a problem. Since I use markers a lot to keep notes to myself about what I want to happen there, I usually go through the trouble of using the converter.

Either way, because of the need to manually produce a midi or cwp file, I don't think that I can automate the whole process. It seems like the cwp2song route can be more automatable due to the need to manually create a song file and import the midi. This is covered by cwp2song.

Thanks for the reply - Stuart

I may be wrong, but I think that the benefit of using CWP2SONG as opposed to just doing a MIDI save / load....is you get VST info as well. (Well, not all, but most). So you don't have to remember which VST you were using, etc. It saves a little time in that aspect.

I will definitely be looking into this when I get some free time. Thanks to everyone who has replied.

The information about what vst instruments used is always in the track.

Before you save the Cakewalk project as a midi file make sure all tracks are clearly labeled. A midi track title can hold 127 characters so you can also include what patches were used. Those of course should also be included in the track headers.
But of course midi is only part of most projects.

I logged into Azslow’s website and found the thread about CWP 2song but there’s nothing about a link to the download. The web page has a download page and it is not showing there either
I posted a question asking where the download is found. Bapu replied and linked to the same thread listed above which also has nothing about the link?
Anyone?

Duh! I knew it was probably right in front of my nose. When I say the "Other Files" it looks more like a header for what is below so I never clicked on it. Thank you my old friend. Boy, seems all the old time Cakewalk forum people are here now. I Should of joined up back in 2017 !

I finished the video:
