Solved While playing and recording you hear the notes perfectly fine, but while listening to the recording only a part of each note is hearable.

Hi, im a total beginner with studio one and the making of music and i have a recording problem.

So my setup consist of:
- iMac 27" 5k, 2017
- Studio One 7
- UMC204HD interface
-SL88 I Studio keyboard
(- UC-33 controler pannel)

When i first used my setup everything worked not perfectly but fine. But then there was some ishues with the recording. So when just playing an virtual instrument everything just works perfect. I can play around with zero ishue. When i record while im playing there are no problems. But when i listen to the recorded section i can hear every note but only a fraction of every note, even when i use my pedal. What you hear from the recording section is really just a fraction of every note. But still, its weird, because the notes that you can see while editing the track all seem fine. So there must be some kind of problem whith some of the settings? Is it in Studio One? Or is it on my keyboard? Or interface? Configuration?
I must have touched something, but i dont know what...

And also, one day I did somethings with the settings, (or buttons,...) and it worked again. But the next day, it was the same as before...

I hope you can help me out!!

Sounds like you are recording double notes. Midi notes are being recorded twice from two sources at once instead of only one input source. Check your input settings for the midi track. Instead of ALL INPUTS change this to the actual controller you are using. It should also be in the list. You have created a Keyboard in your external devices so it will show up there.

So I did that, but then it only works when i use the sustain pedal. So these notes come perfectly through but the other simple notes without the sustain pedal are only a fraction of the notes. Thanks for the reply!

I'm not that much of a MIDI wizard, but could it be you're hearing playback while playing from the Keyboard itself, but that the recorded MIDI has a filter on the aftertouch? (Studio One/Options.../External Devices/[your keyboard]/Edit.../Filter (middle of the pop-up)

After you have done a midi recording, zoom right in with the piano roll view and try erasing a note. Is there a note underneath after you have done that. If so you are experiencing the double notes problem. You are recording midi notes twice instead of once.

Are you connecting the Studio Logic via USB? I am assuming you are.

One thing that can sometimes help find problems with MIDI is the monitor:

View -> MIDI Monitor

If you look at this you can see exactly what messages S1 is receiving from your keyboard. In your case, hit a single note and see if the note off comes immediately after the note on. If so, the issue is with the message the controller is sending. If the "note off" comes later (when you pick up the key) then the problem is with the way S1 (or the software synth) is interpreting or routing the message.

If it's a double notes issue, then this video will help you:

Otherwise, are really all notes being played? If so, is each notes equally short (on playback)?

Hello Pierrot.

If it is a double note input, the cause is probably your SL88 master keyboard.
This has 4 zones (shown in color on its display).

Each of these zones sends event information to the DAW at the MIDI channel that is selected
and results double notes in the recorded VST track.
To prevent this, you must send information at only ONE(!) Zone.
"Stand by", or "Deactivate" (see manual, page 12) the other three zones in your SL88.

and Studio One will receive the note information only at the MIDI channel that is selected by this zone.
This should fix the problem of transmitting(SL88) and receiving double (or more) events in Studio One.
I hope I am right with my assumption.

Best regards from Germany
