Studio One 7 won't play back (on going issue for years)

Hey all, wondering if someone can help me out before I switch daws for good.

This seems to happen when a session gets bigger but my studio one cpu is like 25% my UAD is 25% my computer CPU is 25% - using a usb3 external ssd drive
running two x16s, one x6, one twin x, and a sat DSP UAD interfaces, mac m1 computer 16 gigs of ram

when I open a session, or sometimes in the middle ill hit the space bar to play. and it will hit the green play button but nothing plays and goes back to red stop. if i keep hitting the play button it shows the green play button triggered but nothing plays.

its insanely frustrating in the middle of a session.

I usually cycle power on interface, reboot computer, restart session, change interface back and fourth, change block size etc etc until it resolves. but its just constant now.

does anyone have any insight on this? presonus is utterly useless - they must be too busy making up new features for the DJ market instead lol

also, what other DAW would ppl recommend? I've been on studio one since v3 - but I can't do this any longer in a commercial studio.
thank you!

On going issue for years???
Have you contacted Apple, PreSonus and UAD support during these times?
What release of Studio One Pro 7 are you running?
Are all of your audio interfaces updated to the latest firmware?

I'm running Studio One Pro 7.0.2 with Windows 11 and PreSonus audio interfaces and not having the issue you're having.
Hopefully someone here running Mac M1 and UAD audio devices can offer assistance.

I too have seen this problem many times. In my case, it can occur when I leave my computer running for long periods. Usually restarting SO resolves it, but I figured out chaning my interface's block size back and forth does the trick as well.

I've had this issue several times as well. The play button will light up but nothing happens.

I now know that I cannot just walk away leaving Studio One with an open project. It's a bit of a pain with larger projects but I close down Studio One and re-open the project again if I'm going to be away for more than 10 minutes or so.

This already happens to you after 10 minutes of inactivity? In my case it would be hours, at least.

Do you let your computer go into sleep mode/hibernate? If so, switch that off, most interface drivers do not do well with it.

The only time I have ever seen this happen is when I accidentally click / drag on the arrangement screen...JUST for a millisecond, creating a miniscule selection maybe 1 pixel wide. Then I hit play, and it stops at the end of the selection making it sound like nothing is happening. Other than that, I have never seen this.

To be clear it takes longer than 10 minutes - usually hours.

I phrased it that way since that was my mental processing: "Am I coming right back or will I end up being gone a while?" If the latter, shut down S1. I'd rather re-load Studio One and re-load my project vs rebooting and the two steps.

Absolutely not. I run Windows 10 with all the recommended tweaks.

I blame the issue I'm experiencing on certain plug-ins and Studio One not getting along.

If you can at some point determine what plugins you use when this happens mostly that would be a great place to start. And you are probably correct.

Ok, that one is causing trouble for some time now, which is a shame as I know it really is a great product. But you should report this, both to PreSonus and Dreamtonics, especially if you have crash reports you can send.

Hi Trucky,

Yes, I am doing this for a while so I try to keep my system organized as it should be. Honestly, I was thinking this was more a device driver type of thing with my Scarlett, but if others are having this with a different interface then I am not so sure. Regardless, in my case it happens so rarely I dont mind that much.

But it did happen on both my Windows 10 & 11 setups.

I've this since v6, on different systems. Now with M2 on V7 still the same. I'm using Apollo x8 and 2 Thunderbolt Satellite's. I'm using the last version of all the plugs I've...

I've had this often as well, but almost always after I offline render an Event FX or Transform to Rendered Audio. I also have a Satelite, however. I was told before *somewhere* that I'm using "too many" instances of Pipeline. Just shrugged my shoulders and kept on keeping on. I'm interested if it's actually a UA problem now, though.

For those having this issue...
Be sure to submit a Support Ticket (see link in my signature).

It could be various issues. One of them being USB devices sleeping and not waking up properly. In Windows, you will need to go through each USB hub device in Device Manager and disable "allow sleep", after disabling every sleep option in the optimized power plan.
