Recording and Playback Issues

Hello all!

I've been trying to record my Yamaha Seqtrak in studio one, I can't figure out how to use it with Midi but I did decided to just record it as an instrument in the front "guitar" line which works. But the recording is very low, distorted and cracks and pops. Everything I tried based on google searches hasn't fixed anything. So I tried to use the Line In 1 on the back and this time the playback is very distorted and low before I even record. Any suggestions?

For setup instruction videos go to Studio One - Video Tutorials on the forum homepage and type 'setup'. See if that gives you one or two to help you out :)

Thank you but the setup isn't the issue, it's the playback of the recording that sounds underwater and muffled that I can't fix

I can think of two reasons how that can happen:
  1. Wrong level: Too quiet isn't good (noisy when played back) but too loud isn't good either (causing clipping which will make the recording sound squashed or right out terrible)
  2. Wrong input: Microphone signals, line signals, instrument signals (from string instrument pickups) and outputs to speakers each have their own type of input (for level and impedance). A wrong match will cause distortion and/or damage or very low level recordings. So use the right type of input for the signal you're providing, no matter if the initial plug fits or not.

Are you plugging the Seqtrak into an audio interface? Or are you plugging it directly into your computer?

If it's the former, I don't know what's wrong. If it's the latter, you may want to invest in an audio interface. Most of them have a MIDI input.

The Seqtrak probably produces a line output signal. You shouldn't plug that into an instrument input which is for strings pickup signals (guitar, bass, ...).

MIDI is a completely different game. It doesn't send sound but it sends information about keys played, timing, length, velocity to name the most important parameters. And then in your computer you can pick a virtual instrument to play those notes back.
