Pipeline XT: what am I doing wrong?

coro

hey all

I want to process my voice in the Chroma Console via Pipeline XT but currently is not working and I'm not sure why
In my mental routing should all be correct but deeeff it's not XD
Do you see anything wrong in these?

Just for the record, the Output 3/4 of your Quantum HD8 are connected to the input of the external device, and then the output of the external goes into Mic/Line in 5/6 of the QHD8?

3/4 output --> Chroma Console Input L/R

5/6 inputs --> Chroma Console Output L/R

That seems right to me... I'm not at home these days, only laptop without external gear, so I can't really test and check further. You did the [auto] and bacho icon setup sequence?

Hi Coro,
Yep, that looks correct to me. Have you tried sending signal directly rather than through Pipeline just to test? That is, take a track with some audio on it, set the output to 5/6 and then take another audio track and set the input to 3/4. That should tell you if audio is taking the correct path. Also, in Pipeline, do you see the output or input meters lighting up?

Hey Dean,

Here's Pigments track with the output to 5/6 to the Chroma and it works

Altho' I can hear the dry Pigments signal too while the Chroma is in full wet. Which is not what I'm after

Another thing I've noticed is that I can hear the Chroma via pipeline XT when my speakers are on ... but not when I'm only using headphones.

But my headphones output in UC is set to Main L/R which is puzzling since Studio One should be outputting to Main L/R?

I've tried downloading the manual of UC but it looks different there...

I deffo need to learn how this UC thing works because I strongly feel it's a routing setting

I've looked on YT for days but haven't found a video that goes thru UC the way I need.

if something comes to mind, a specific video, please share <3

UPDATE:
I've found the manual (was picking the wrong one) which is the USB specific UC manual
Also I've found out why it Chroma was only audible when speakers were on
Set the main encoder to 1-2 instead of ALL

I think I also solved the Pipeline XT thing but I still want to test it properly.

Thanks for chiming in <3

UPDATE 2 and final question before I solve this for good

currently

- Pipeline is set to full wet
- Chroma Console is set to full wet
- UC guitar channel is muted

But I still clearly hear the clean signal of the guitar

any idea where this is coming from?

It’s been a long time since I had a Presonus Interface. But there were two distinct operation modes: interface and mixer. (I cannot remember the correct terms). Basically it means when you set your interface to mixer mode, then the inputs are mixed by the interface for the output. So you still hear all inputs. In the other mode you must do all monitoring, listening etc. by yourself in the DAW. And if I recall correctly, then this is the mode to go for proper use of Pipeline.

I hope my fuzzy description isn’t too confusing.

But there were two distinct operation modes: interface and mixer.

This could indeed be the issue. I don't know how UC works with the Quantum, but you should be able to bypass the mixer and put all I/O under Studio One's control. Try that, and see if it works. If so, then circle back and see if you can find Mixer settings that work so you don't have to switch between the two modes. Here's an excerpt from The Huge Book of Studio One Tips and Tricks on using Pipeline with the 1824c interface. Hopefully the Quantum works similarly, so this ends up being helpful:

Using Pipeline with Universal Control’s Mixer

As mentioned previously, bypassing Universal Control’s mixer when using Pipeline helps avoid the potential for feedback. The downside is that bypassing these settings may require reconfiguring the signal path routings, and then reverting to the custom settings. However, with the right routings and fader settings, you can use Pipeline without bypassing the mixer. To do this with the 1824c audio interface and Universal Control:

1. In this example, we’ll assume interface outputs 3 and 4 feed the external hardware’s inputs. The hardware’s outputs return to the interface via inputs 3 and 4.

Caution: Do any routings and fader settings before turning up your monitoring system’s level. Accidental feedback could damage your hearing.

2. Open Universal Control and then open its Mixer application.

3. In Universal Control’s mixer, click on the Main tab. Turn down all faders except for the DAW 1 stereo output channel from Studio One and the Main Output (fig. 1.63). Once everything works properly, you can revisit these settings if you need to monitor other channels.

Figure 1.63 The two faders turned up on the Main Mix are the stereo output from Studio One’s main bus, and the Universal Control output that feeds the audio interface’s physical outs.

4. Choose the Mix tab that corresponds to the outputs feeding the external hardware. In this case, it’s Mix 3/4 (fig. 1.64). Set the Mix 3/4 fader and the Universal Control faders for channels 3 and 4 to 0.00. To ensure against feedback, click Mute for Studio One’s stereo output fader. You don’t want to turn up this fader! For Mixes that don’t involve outputs 3 and 4 (e.g., Mix 5/6, Mix 7/8), the fader settings don’t matter.

5. Now you’re ready to go. Adjust the levels in Pipeline, ping it to compensate for latency, and start using your external hardware.

Thank you both!

Solved!

I just switched off the mixer and now works as expected

btw Craig I just remembered I bought your awesome book back in spring and should go back at it properly.

Hope this helps anyone in the future

I'm glad you got everything working! Crossinger jogged my memory of how I dealt with the same problem.

I bought your awesome book back in spring and should go back at it properly.

Cool - but before you do, download the free update to version 2.2. It has over 70 new or extensively revised tips compared to version 2.1, as well as more presets and other improvements.

cool! and just checked and I've got the 2.1 ... mind telling me where I can download the updated copy? bought it on SW but in my ored history I don't see a way to update it?
Thanks!!

All you need to do is download the book again, using the same credentials you used to download v2.1. This works no matter which version you have, even if it's from the 1st edition. The version that's available for download is always the most current version. Have fun!

Got it! thanks a bunch!
and out of sheer curiosity about anyone who creates these hyper detailed guides about a software:
how long did it take you to become a power user?
and is there a single tip you'd suggest to someone who needs to become a power user?

how long did it take you to become a power user?

I'm still learning every day! Yeah, I know a lot of stuff...but there's even more stuff I don't know.

is there a single tip you'd suggest to someone who needs to become a power user?

That's a very interesting question with many possible answers. If I had to pick one tip, it would be to ask "What if?," not "How do I?" If you ask "how do I," you can come up with only what's happened before - like if you ask "how do I get a good vocal sound?," you'll find out how other people got what they thought were good vocal sounds. But if you ask "what if I use gain envelopes and limiting instead of compression on vocals?," you'll pursue new options and learn new techniques.

And of course, there's the old joke:

Q. What's a power user?
A. Someone reads the manual :ROFLMAO:

..and what you're saying is kinda necessary before following my tip (y)

that power user joke cracked me up, so true

my situation is that, after almost 30y of using DAWs, I get my head around quite fast obvs and regarding S1, after 10 months of daily use I know how to do everything I need in order to work. Same I did with Live back in the days, Reaper and 15 years of Logic.

But I always had a bug in my head: "ok, fine, I know how to use S1 simply because I can do my job from A to Z, but I wonder how many cool feats are still available I don't know they're available?"

Which is the reason why I got your book. And, with time since S1 is now (and will be) my DAW maybe even until the very end, I'll go thru' each proposition in the book to see if there's anything I might find useful for my workflow (game audio, both composing and sound design)

So my question was a little more specific to someone who already knows how to use S1 but, like in your case, wants to write a proper book about it.

Did you mostly prep y'erself up by deep diving into the manual page by page to be able to make a book like the one you did?
