Solved No playback after drive change and hardware addition

Hello. So a lot has happened in a couple of days. I acquired a brand new laptop to replace an old machine. Installed the newest version of S1v7, uploaded a WAV of a song I recorded in another DAW, and made some minor edits to the song. So I know the software works on the computer. But I made some changes and now it will not play back the song I uploaded the other day. I can see the waveforms and the meters bounce up and down, just no sound.

Here are some changes I made between the software working until the present time when it is not working:

1) I had a second SSD installed on my laptop, therefore had to uninstall S1 and reinstall in the new C: drive,
2) I received and installed my new audio interface, a Universal Audio 476P. (When I made those edits previously, the device and its drivers had not been installed yet),
3) I installed a bunch of plugins from the audio interface purchase,
4) And I went through the Presonus Knowledge Base (https://support.presonus.com/hc/en-...Optimizing-Your-Computer-for-Audio-Windows-11) and made some optimizing changes to my computer.

I don't think #1 or #3 are the culprits. I have two guesses. Maybe with installing and plugging in the new interface, the inputs changed on the tracks and I don't know how to assign them correctly. Or when I was optimizing the PC, maybe I messed up the Realtek stock sound card or something in some settings somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

Confirm that the Universal Audio 476P audio interface plays the wav file in Windows Media Player and is listed as an audio device in Windows OS.

Please update your signature (see link and example in mine) with your system specs.

Hi, thank you! Yes, I am able to play the file in WMP and the UA 476P is listed as an audio device.

I also put my specs in sig

Have you tried creating a new song in Studio One to confirm that audio is working?

Here's a little more backstory.

The reason I bought a new laptop is because my old desktop machine, running XP, is in its final throes of death. All of my equipment is set up in a spare bedroom at my guitar player's house. My one bed apartment is too small and noisy for recording. I am currently in my home setting up the laptop that will be my new recording machine. The problem is, all of my mikes are at his house.

I am hoping to go to his house Tuesday to record and I was betting on the equipment being ready for plug and play. Didn't want to spend 2 hrs in someone's house setting all this up when I thought I could theoretically do it at home.

So here we are. The only mic I have nearby is a Rode USB-C podcasting mic, but my audio interface only takes XLR, TRS, and midi. I really appreciate your help and I don't want to waste your time. Are there any ways to troubleshoot without having a mic handy? I'm sorry I'm not in an ideal environment today.

Just tried. Since I have no mic to plug in, the software is urging me into edit mode instead of record mode

Okay. I found an instrument cable and recorded a 10 second riff on acoustic guitar. Did not play back. I texted my guitar player and he was home so I picked up a dynamic mic, SDC mic, and a cable. I always shut everything down when I leave. When I got back home and fired up the computer, now everything plays in S1. The 10 second riff I recorded plays and more importantly, I got the file to play that I edited the other night.

Even though I restarted several times during all of the installations, I'm wondering if turning on and off again fixed something. Thank you, @Trucky for your time!

Okay, I think I figured out the overarching problem. My damn reference monitors are USB and plugged into my laptop. In my studio, I have the standard 1/4" TRS plug active monitors. Since my monitors at home are USB, they are not receiving the signal since the master output is through the audio interface.

This explains why I was able to get sound last night.... through my headphones. I never did get it to play through the monitors, I just thought the problem was solved since my headphones got sound.

So my new question is, will I be able to leave my interface at the studio but bring my laptop home and mix through USB monitors? Or is S1 now married to my interface and will only monitor through the device?

I would like to be able to record in the studio and bring my computer home to mix without also lugging around my interface. My old DAW software allowed monitoring with no interface plugged in.

The audio device assignments & layout are (AFAIK) saved in the *.song file. Make a default layout using USB spkrs in your home laptop and save it. Import the song, load the appropriate local setup, and you should be good.

Thank you so much! With your help I fixed the problem, even though I don't think S1 allows us to make our own templates. With my song open, I went to the Song menu > Song Setup > and am able to toggle between using my interface as the input or using Windows Audio. Now I can record in the studio, bring my laptop home, and mix without hauling my interface around.

On the audio devices setup page lower right corner, you can import & export your device & Input/Output settings.
I have several Audio I/O devices and switch between them that way.
