My PreSonus Blog Tips Are Ending

Craig Anderton

Well-known member
All good things must come to an end, and PreSonus is changing how they plan to present information. So, my regular series of tips for the PreSonus blog will be discontinued at the end of 2025. I don't know what will happen to the material that's already posted, so:

  • Now would be a good time to copy any of the posts you want for reference, in case they disappear.
  • If you don't copy them, any new tips not already included in The Big Book of Studio One Tips and Tricks v2.2 will be included in the next book update.
  • I'll continue adding tips to the book, even though they won't appear in the PreSonus blog, and continue to release book updates through Sweetwater Publishing.

PreSonus emphasized their decision had nothing to do with the content. They always appreciated the work I put into the tips, and they'd like me to be available for unspecified future projects.

I started writing the tips back in 2017, so it was a good run! I always looked forward to writing them, and greatly appreciate all the support from the community over the years. I'd also like to thank Ryan Roullard, and then Dustin Phillips, for doing the heavy lifting of posting them on the PreSonus site.

Reading this makes me sad. I really like the blogposts. Especially since they appear so regularly. Nearly always I learned something new I didn't think I needed to learn, only to find out it was at least fun to learn, and most of the time very worthwhile! That randomness of topics being served up to me is what makes it so valuable. That is not easily replaced by the book. I don't mean to criticise the book, on the contrary, but I see that more as an encyclopedia while the blogs were more like candy treats...

My Fridays will not be the same without your weekly blog posts. To further make Gerran's point about the variation in topics, many may feel that gain staging may be old hat as a topic, let alone two posts worth. But I learned to be more effective at measuring, monitoring, and optimizing levels at all points in the chain because of those posts. I now practice these techniques almost always.

As for the book, I learn something new everyday and give it a try. I highlight the PDF at both the table of contents and where it links. This lets me quickly jump back and forth to any topic. That will have to be my candy for now. :(

I registered for this forum exactly one year ago tomorrow. Click on the Members tab above. Presonus can thank the people that you see there in large part for being the reason that I recently renewed my annual S1 Pro+ subscription. I had a lot to cover to update my late 1990s setup to 2024, and this forum was a mainstay. Thank you.

BTW,I just upgraded to Melodyne editor edition this afternoon. I can edit polyphony. Wow!

You could always do weekly post here :)

I'll consider that an invitation, thanks :) One issue is that many of the posts had embedded audio and downloadable presets, which aren't compatible file types here. However, they are at Musicplayer.com, where I have a forum, and they'd be happy to post tips. Also, PreSonus didn't want me to do videos, whereas Musicplayer has its own YouTube channel. In any case, I won't be doing weekly tips. I knew this was coming, and have accepted some writing offers that will limit my available time. But I use Studio One almost every day and can't not write tips :), so I'll figure out something.

The only reason I posted this thread was to give a heads-up to people who wanted to copy any of the posts in case they go away. I really like the community here, so if nothing else I'll continue to participate.

I'm sure everybody here (myself included) are happy to read whatever you have time for.

So sad to hear that, Craig.

Of all things (available time, budget etc.), this is something we could change very easily.

Hosting them here as an archive would be awesome.

We failed to do it for the old forum knowledgebase, perhaps we could succeed in doing it for what was arguably one of the best Pro audio blogs in the world?

The data overhead would be miniscule.

Incidentally, why Presonus and/or Fender wouldn't simply be sure to archive your excellent body of work over the years is quite simply baffling.

It's like saying 'Yeah, we're bulldozing down this library to put up a shopping mall, just throw all those books in the dumpster out back...'

What?!
There's no need to confirm or deny, but 'changing the way they present information' probably translates to 'dumbing down the content' in an effort to pander to something like 'mass appeal'... which I think is a mistake that misunderstands Studio One's niche.

It was a mistake to nuke the old board and it's a mistake to nuke the pro audio blog. We are not Tiktok users. Studio One's rich featureset is attractive to people like Craig, like me, like Lukas. That's been the backbone of its userbase for the last decade.

You're not going to draw Garageband users when most of the userbase is MIDI Professionals who record the occasional band looking for a Cubase alternative.

In any case, not archiving the work would be tactless... I hope they don't do that regardless of whatever else they are doing.

This is just lame, and it also shows me that Presonus have zero instinct when it comes to what people want from this company. Cutting off your blog posts, ending the sample packs for the subscription, and an anemic update schedule (compared to Ableton Live, Cubase, and yes: even Cakewalk Sonar) over the last year makes me wonder what the point of all this is. These actions have deeply effected the direction of my studio. I purchased an SSL 18 instead of the Quantum HD8, and I sunk a lot of money into the SSL series of control surfaces instead of a Faderport 16 over the last three months due to decisions like this. I still use S1 at the beginning song writing stage because it's so easy to use, but have moved on mixing it all in Cubase. I also do it because I need to learn another program due to feeling like Presonus has gone off path. There are some brilliant features to S1, such as the ability to swap from patterns to MIDI and back again, which no other program can do. Sorry to rant, but getting rid of these blog posts is dumb and deaf.

Oh uh, wait a sec Craig, and sorry for being out of the loop, but around this time last year when we 'waved bye-bye' to the old forum, I thought you said they deleted all the blog posts then and there?

Were they rehosted? I seem to remember you saying they might be, but perhaps I missed where they got returned.

I had waved my goodbyes to them already at that point :O

They deleted all posts up to (IIRC) September 2022, so about five years of posts disappeared. I found out about that when I tried to link to a previous post and couldn't find it. I haven't heard back from PreSonus whether they're going to delete the posts that are currently up, so I figured a heads-up was in order.

Actually they don't need to, because Sweetwater is doing that by publishing The Huge Book of Studio One Tips and Tricks. Realistically, that's a better option than keeping the posts up forever. The book has now gone through 7 free revisions, and it's not just about adding new tips. Old tips get revised or improved, tips about workarounds that aren't needed anymore go away, screen shots are revised, etc. I couldn't make those changes in the blog. but I have complete control over the book so I can present the material however I believe is optimum.

Granted, the eBook/software costs $19.95 but it's a lot of work just to proof 900+ pages, let alone write/edit them. The internal links, contents page, better organization, preset downloads, audio examples, etc. make the eBook package a better permanent home for the tips. And even though I said when going to a new edition those with older editions would need to pay half-price for the update, I didn't do that when it went from 1.x to 2.x. It came out around the same time that PreSonus made all those huge changes and I didn't want to contribute to the confusion.
Of all things (available time, budget etc.), this is something we could change very easily.

Ever notice how Lukas ALWAYS comes through? (y) 👏

All I would really need is an embedded MP3 player people could click on in a post, and .trackpreset and .multipreset formats available as download options.

It's kind of good to get a break and free up some time. I'm doing three presentations at NAMM and one of them is a keynote, I'll be able to finish my next book (The Ultimate Guide to Vocal Production) sooner, and I'm just starting to emerge from a lot of grief so I want to enjoy the holidays.

Let PreSonus be PreSonus, and we'll see what they come up with. Meanwhile, I'll keep being me. I kinda suck at being someone else, anyway :ROFLMAO:

Actually, I did save all threads of the old PreSonus forum back to 2017. Studio One Community Support and the Notion Forum. I even started creating a forum archive viewer website. The problem was that nobody could tell me whether it would be possible to make it public without running into legal problems, so I never ended up publishing it.

This and another forum post seem to add up to big changes happening at Presonus. It makes me wonder where S1 is heading.

What "another forum post" are you referring to?

VP

The problem was that nobody could tell me whether it would be possible to make it public without running into legal problems, so I never ended up publishing it.

I'm not a lawyer, but based on previous forum experience, the legality depends on whether users had to accept an agreement when they signed up. Usually, there's language that specifies ownership of the posts. In this case, it would likely be PreSonus. When Fender acquired PreSonus, those assets would belong to Fender if they were included in the list of assets Fender obtained from the aquisition. So, they should be able to approve parking the archived forum somewhere.

Another option would be to ask Fender to transfer any rights for the old forum content to this forum. I doubt they would see value in the old forum, and would be willing to hand it over. Then, it's no longer anything they have to think about.

If there was no agreement and people could just sign up, and it's not a Fender asset, with no copyright or ownership it's probably public domain.

Finally, the only legal danger is if the forum contained something defamatory and someone wanted to sue for damages. However, in the United States, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields platforms from liability for user‑generated content. But even if that wasn't the case, the statute of limitations for filing a defamation lawsuit is 1 to 3 years, depending on the state.

This is a bad look for the mothership. I can't watch videos on a car ride or riding the bus or laying in bed at night, but I have spent many a night reading over your blog posts at 3:30am while I fall asleep. Always felt like I learned something. Too bad.

Yes I do remember that back when we were scrambling to preserve it Lukas, well done there.

It would be cool to get that ironed out at some point because the old knowledgebase was indispensable for new users... can't tell you the amount of times I got a search result return from Googling a S1 issue only to find it lead to a dead link on that old forum, and I imagine new users would have ran into the exact thing even more often as they have more questions.

Craig, that sounds like 20 bucks well spent to me.

I recall you sharing about all your hardships and am glad you are working through them. Enjoy your holiday season. You are truly appreciated around these parts.

Maybe Craig could use the archives as source material for a new title ...
