Monitor recs?

Full of Hands

(Mods: this is more of a Presonus-adjacent post, so please feel free to boot this if it's too off-topic)

Anyhoo, let's talk reference monitors. I've been using a pair of Presonus Eris 3.5 for way too long (life is expensive). Looking to upgrade. The 3.5 really struggles to accurately monitor low end (it's only rated down to 80Hz), so I'm mostly mixing my lows with my eyes instead of my ears. Less than ideal. My home studio setup isn't terribly conducive to a separate subwoofer either, so I'm just looking for a good pair of two-ways.

Do any of y'all use Presonus's larger Eris models? I'm seeing some used 8s for not unreasonable prices (<$400 for the pair) and am curious if they're worth it. Or are there others in this price range that you all prefer? Kali LP6 V2 seem to get good marks, same with Yamaha HSx, for instance. JBL's 300 series is around here too but I see too many reviews noting how much hiss their amps produce.

Glad this community found new footing after the old one got nuked. Huge thanks to all who keep this running!

My son uses a pair of Eris E5 XT's--he is also hesitant about using a sub as he lives in an apartment building.

He likes them, and I thought they worked well with his set up.

I got a single Presonus R65 for dirt cheap to use as a mono reference and I was floored by it. Generally surprised they aren’t more widely used or recommended.

Hearing something way too long isn't necessarily a bad thing, and could 3v3n work in your favor if you know how the monitors translate. Yes, those 3.5's along without a sub woofer will leave you in the dark on even knowing what's going on down there. You might consider putting that $400 into a matched Presonus sub woofer. I don't know their particular models or prices. What I can tell you is $400 relatively priced monitors aren't all that different. Of course taking away some of the blatantly bad brands I won't mention to offend anyone. If the sub is $300, and you added an analyzer, pink noise generator, and balanced the room. Even add some acoustic tiling in places and go iver the room acoustics, you'd be doing a great service to knowing your monitors better. Or if you simply want to up the anti and spend $400, I'd still suggest analyzing the room, and getting a sub (if the cabinets can't produce below 50 hz. The Yamaha HS6 or HS8 are a good bet, pretty flat and sound great. So are the JBL 308P mkII's. If I'm being honest, you'll really want to go Focal at a minimum, and that's just the nature of the beast. Decent monitors truly run about $1500+ ea. But as I said, if you know your speakers and how they translate, out in the world, you'll be well off. And still having control over your room acoustics will be a must.

....then again, there is the option of headphone mixing which has rewards in its own right.
