Solved Melodyne - What Happened to the Events?

JBMusic

Member
I was working on a vocal track and was using ARA to edit in Melodyne. I had a first and second verse completed and sometime after saving and reloading it I decided I wanted to completely change the second verse so I redid it and after I applied Melodyne I took notice that the first verse was all messed up. The clips were all at the wrong place but just in the first verse. The second (redone) verse was OK so I had to redo the first verse too.

Can anybody tell me what happened so I can avoid this in the future.

Thanks

:) John B

Are you using "Takes to Layers" or "Replace" for Record Mode?
How many events (check the Pool in the Browser) were created for the track?

I've not had the issue with Melodyne that you're having.

Please provide the "exact steps" you used and I'll try to replicate on my system to see if I experience the same issue you had.

Before and After screenshots help too...

I'm sure I didn't have the replace button ticked. I recorded the first verse of the song and later, recorded a second verse. I then applied Melodyne through the event manager by right clicking on each clip and choosing "Edit With Melodyne". I shut down everything for the day and the next day I decided I wanted to change the second verse. Everything was in place at the start of the session so I went to the second verse and deleted all the clips and redid the entire second verse and applied Melodyne the same way to the second verse as I did to the first and original second. I just took for granted the first verse didn't change but upon looking at the beginning of the project I found that all the clips were scattered and out of place as if the clips were displaced. I cannot show the screenshots because I corrected them by re recording them. Today I started a third verse and when I last checked everything was still in place there.

One clue though: When I originally recorded the first verse I applied Melodyne via the old transfer method but I decided I wanted to use the ARA Integration method so I removed Melodyne from the track entirely, saved the session without the Melodyne and went back in and re applied Melodyne via ARA. I then saw that a folder named "Melodyne" was on my desktop and I like to keep things together in the same project folder so I moved the Melodyne folder from the desktop to the folder of the project I'm working on. I hope this helps you to help me. I'd like to know what's going on.

Good clue...
Yes, don't use the old Melodyne transfer method.
Also please note that Studio One calls them events (not clips).

To avoid this issue happening again in the future...

My preferred method:
1. Make all the necessary edits/changes to any of the vocal events in a track.
2. Select all the events in the track and bounce (Ctrl-B) as one event.
3. Right click the event and choose "Edit with Melodyne" (Ctrl-M) if pitch/timing is needed.

For me, Melodyne is more reliable and easier to work on one event vs. multiple events.

I've had Melodyne mess up the way you described in Studio One as well on occasion. Tried to figure the sequence of events out, but no luck so far.

Doesn't help much, I know...

Moving the files to your Studio One folder was the reason for the hiccup:
The ARA files are created in your project directory, the old transfer files are created on your desktop - both are not compatible.
Once dragged into your S1 folder the ARA version tries to include them and this messes up your content.
This won’t happen again if you stay with one method.

That makes the most sense. Right after I finished the second verse and was preparing to close shop for the day I happened to look down and see that Melodyne folder on the desktop. I opened the folder and saw there were only 3 files dated 3/10 but as I said, I like to keep everything in the project folder. After I did that that's when I checked back on the project and saw the chaos. Thanks all for your help. I learn something new every time I use S1.

I absolutely second this. Melodyne is fiddly as hell if working in multuple events. The only time I'd use more than one event is if a song has a key change.

With Melodyne once the changes have been made ctrl B is the best method to not have problems with any DAW also because if I leave Melodyne operational in many events I have a significant consumption of resources
