Install 2 different versions of S1 v7?

I started way back with v1.6.5.
Funny thing... back then we got Cubase Lite when purchasing a PreSonus Firewire interface.
Upgrading to Cubase Full was too much $$, thats when I came across S1. 🤗

Johnny Geib had a way of installing the newest version of S1, while still being able to keep/run your current/previous version.
I didn't use S1 much during v6 and forgot how to do this.

Now when I try, the new version loses track of my Songs, Projects, etc.. and I have to mess with 'Options' to fix.
And... I also have my VST's spread all over (yes, not best practice) but with all their paths entered, they seem to show up. 🙄

Any easy way to install and to run 2 versions of v7 (of course, 1 at a time)?

Don't you get the 'do you want to keep the previous version' question when updating? I've always installed the point updates in the same default location, keeping one or two older apps/executables as a fallback. That way nothing needs to move.

And yeah, why not keep/put all the support stuff in the default locations? It saved me a ton of headaches.:)

That's a MacOS thing. On Windows, you have to specify a different folder name during installation...

Actually, yes. If you are installing a new version, just choose a different location. For example, if the installer for 7.1.1 defaults to C:\Program Files\PreSonus\Studio One 7, just change that name and have it install to C:\Program Files\PreSonus\Studio One 7.7.1.

Now you have both versions installed side-by-side, and you can always choose which one you want to launch.

Your desktop icons will still show "Studio One 7", but you can hover over the link to see which application folder it points to. And if you want, rename it to "Studio One 7.1.1".

Thanks for all the great answers everyone!

My PC is 1.5 years old and I installed S1, ver 5.5.1 (the first) on my M:/ SSD to keep it separate from the OS SSD drive.

It might not matter now since I don't have as much junk on this PC as on my old laptop....
But I've heard that letting installers always use C:/ as their default, will fill it up 1st and can cause issues later on. 😨
Is that a Wives Tail?

If not... and S1 v7 Should be On the C:/ for best operation, can I just simply 'drag' the Songs, Projects, Shows, etc Folders from M: over to C:/ ???

There seems to be Way more 'settings' files in Users/AppData/Roaming/PreSonus/S1-7 than I remember. 🧐
Do they all stay the same and simply update with new locations, if needed?
Any other items I should be concerned about here?

I'm not sure where you've heard that. Generally that's not true.

Installing programs on C:\ is completely fine and most of the time it's the recommended approach because Windows expects applications to be there, and some software might not function properly if moved elsewhere. Studio One will work from another drive/partition, but certain settings and dependencies will still be stored on C:\ (like user data and registry entries).

Keep in mind that the Studio One installation only takes up about 300 MB, so it's not really a large app.

Content such as Sound Sets can be stored or moved to a different drive without issues. That's what could take up some space.

And yes, you can store your Studio One songs and projects whereever you want. They don't need to be in the User Data Folder Songs/Projects/Shows folders. However, the Songs/Projects/Shows tabs on the Start Page will only show you songs in the User Data Folder. Other songs, once opened, will only appear in the "Recent" tab.

Okay,

Thank you very much Lukas for taking the time to explain this in detail. 🙏

I understand it all now and will let the next version install to the default C: drive location that pops up.

And I'll save this reply in a note inside the Studio One Note Section and a Word file. 😉
