How to organize songs

Guys I am probably the dumbest studio one user ever. Some one tell me how I can organize my start page into groups of songs like: sacred songs, bluegrass songs, original songs. Why can’t I create folders and then add fifteen or twenty songs to each folder? Right now my start page has about seventy or so songs that I have recorded and they are all jumbled up and I can’t tell what’s what. I imagine this is too basic to put in the online manual but I am old school and need basic help!

I only work on one song at a time so never had a need for folders. You could have all your songs organized in windows explorer and double click on the song file to open it. Maybe there is such a thing and I just don't know about it or you can make a feature request here:

You can create folders and move your songs between these folders in the Songs (or Projects or Shows) tab of the Start Page:

Right-click on a song and choose "Move to Folder" or "Move to New Folder...".

Lukas' suggestions work. Another little trick I learned is to use the Project page as a sort of listening room. With each song you have, you can send them to whatever Projects you have. Call them Project Sacred, Project Bluegrass, Projects Indy, etc. They don't take up a lot of room, open super quick, and you can listen quickly to your catalog of songs that way. Then just retrieve them, or select to edit them right from Project page to open that latest song. When the song is finished for that session, right click in the save area, naturally save the song, but also update the project it came from.

Project doesnt always have to be about making an album. It can be useful in other ways. It's up to you, but with development, comes responsibility.
Hope that helps.

Thanks! I should’ve tried that. Now how do I get a song on the start page recently files to songs so I have this option
Songs you opened in Studio One will be shown there.

It will show all songs that are in your user data "Songs" folder. You can look it up in the Options under Locations.

Songs you opened in Studio One will be shown there.
This only applies for the Recent tab. The Songs/Project/Shows tab will only show documents in the user data folder.

My "Recent Files" tab shows files I've worked on, but my "Songs" tab is empty. Right now to work on tracks not in the "Recent Files" tab I need to navigate to song location using the "Open"option. Not sure how to populate my "Songs" tab. My "User Data Location" appears to be correct ... any thoughts?

To get any of those songs back to your songs tab, open whatever songs you've worked on via Explorer. It's likely User/Documents/Studio One/Songs/ select the file in the song sub folder of choice. Once any of those song files open in Studio One, they will then be available in your songs tab, one by one there after. They'll also show up on the recent tab as well.

In Studio One under Preferences/Locations you can set your User Data Location.
Songs on the Studio One start page shows the songs in the Songs subfolder of your User Data Location (and Projects shows the Projects subfolder, and Shows shows the Shows subfolder). Recent Files is the only tab that will look outside the User Data Location.

I'm on a Mac ... But I'll give it a try.
Good Andy, it will be the same convention with your Mac. Also note Switchback's point as to the recent tab, song tab, and opting to set your data location.

With that, please add your system specs to your signature, so we know what it is you're using. Plus, you'll only have to do that once for future posts.

Disclaimer: Not sure this works on the Mac.

You can bypass the start menu completely if you want. Keep a shortcut (alias) for Studio One on your desktop, and also create a shortcut (alias) for the main folder with all your songs and folders of soungs. With the song folder open, drag a .song file on top of the Studio One shortcut. Studio One will bypass the start menu and open directly to that song.

Once Studio One is open, you can drag .song files from the desktop or Studio One's Browser on top of the Studio One UI to open them. Again, this requires no start menu navigation.

These options are very useful for me because while writing a blog post or proofing a book, I may generate 10 or 20 test songs in a day. At the end of whatever I'm doing, to avoid cluttering the song folder, I can drag in each file to decide if there are any I want to keep. If not, it's easy to mass-delete them from the desktop.

One of Studio One's cool attributes is that if often offers multiple, yet different, ways to accomplish a task. Then, you choose the option that suits your workflow best. For example, lokeyfly's Project page trick above is pretty brilliant :)

Where is preferences/location

I think I found the issue on my system... the culprit (as suggested by "Switchback") was my path locations under the "User Data" tab in Preferences. After changing my User Data preference to " /Users/macstudio/Documents/Studio One/Songs" ... and dragging some song files from my external drive into that folder... the Song tab populated with the titles I dragged in. So my follow up question is how to properly set up a path directory on my external HD that will allow the same behavior?
When my external user data location was "/Volumes/OWC STX HDD/Songs" the Song tab was empty. Ideally I want my Song files living on my large external HD.

My system is Mac Studio M2 (64 GB) Memory, 2 TB Storage, Mac OS 14.6.1, Studio One Pro 7.02.

That's what I said.

It will show all songs that are in your user data "Songs" folder. You can look it up in the Options under Locations.

When you open the "New" dialog you can see exactly in which folder the song will be created.

Once the new song was created (and is open), you can do Song -> Show Media Folder to locate this folder in Explorer.

I vaguely remember that it can make a difference whether you install software (like Studio One) from a user account or from the/an admin account on your computer. Something for the computer literates to comment on. Either way you have to make sure that your User Data Location is set to a location accessible from the account you use to run Studio One. Inside that location Studio One will automatically create the subfolders Songs, Projects, Shows, etc. as needed so don't set your User Data Location to something/something/Songs!

You can set your User Data Location by opening the Preferences window in Studio One, e.g. by clicking on Configure Audio Device... on the start page. At the top of the preferences window click on the Locations tab to access the User Data tab and setting.
