Had to buy Logic Pro

And man I really really do not like it. I currently run Studio One as my main mixing DAW, Pro Tools for recording and editing, and Digital Performer for film scoring compatibility. I am fairly fluent in Cubase and get around fine in Audition. I feel confident using any of those programs in a professional setting. However, yesterday I was told that to be involved in a specific project where everyone was using Logic, I had to get on board. No bouncing to AAF anymore. So I bought it, installed it, and spent the night working on it. Everything is backwards and the workflow is goofy. Yes there’s some quirks and differences within the language between studio one and PT. Like, Aux tracks function differently and such. But i feel like S1 is what I want PT to be when I’m mixing. I have never run into something that felt completely unintuitive just opening a session. Everything feels randomly placed and unconventional. I understand this is purposeful and people love Logic, but I’m old now.

I generally stay away from YouTube mixers but is there anyone you like that you’d recommend who is working in logic and demos workflow? Any tips you have for not hating this program?

Also, I feel like it would make things a lot easier if I could slave it to Studio One and run one interface with two machines. However, my other computer is a Mac Pro running 10.13 and I can’t seem to download any old versions of Logic from the App Store. Anyone have a DMG for 10.3.2 lying around?

Sorry for the rant.

I have felt you Logic confusion, as it is pretty counter-intuitive for me as well...but I don't think a Logic DMG would work that way, as each copy is tied to a specific Apple account, just like one's apple iCloud.

There are several Logic users groups that feature pretty detailed videos and 'how-to' things on the internet, most of have some direct tie in with Apple.

I agree, and while well versed in PT as well, Studio One just instantly gelled with the way I work. PT for me is only resource related, now. I used logic too long ago to share anything insightful.

Either that or using Rewire. Unfortunately, Studio One no longer utilizes Rewire. I had ran some very cool side by side DAW synchronization with Rewire. Particularly with Reason. Rewire stopped somewhere around the beginning of ver 5 or 6. Too bad. SMPTE synchronization in a patchbay could be something in your future. Just throwing that out there. Particularly when locking onto video or time stamping.

Never apologize. I'm sure part of the reason for creating this forum was not only for Studio One information and assistance, but also productive venting. You're covered.
It's what we do. 👍

You *may* consider using the Session setup included with your Metric Halo, as it is its own DAW within the MH world that runs with AAIF, WAV, or whatever, locks to SMPTE, integrates video, and does pretty much everything Logic does without all the VI stuff. I may be mistaken, but I think you can run S1 and Session simultaneously.

ahhhh I see. I wasn’t sure if I could just download it and log in. Thank you for the info.

And I will look around at different forums and find what feels right. I appreciate this response.

Also Logicprohelpdotcom is a very good forum where you can get answers to your specific questions pretty fast.

I can’t let go of playlist / layer editing in pro tools. It just clicks in my brain. I always feel a little helpless when editing in S1, but I really hope to get better at it some day.

Totally! I currently run PT on an old machine in this way (main computer through Ethernet and slave computer over usb) and feel pretty comfortable doing it. That way I can still use the programs but use more of my comfortable S1 abilities in mixdown.

I have to apologize though! It’s in my nature lol. Hope you’re well man!

Heck yeah! Thank you so much for these. I’ll check them out.

I love session. It is so good. I sometimes feel like I’m on an island when I talk about it and glad you brought it up. They’re forcing me to use Logic so I can stay current with VI stuff. Which is annoying, but the VI in Logic seem to be quite good.

ReWire was a collaboration of Propellerheads (now Reason Studios) with some involvement from Steinberg. Reason Studios abandoned it without creating a library for Apple Silicon, so one will likely never exist. I was hoping ReWire would become open source, but it didn't. Although it's still possible to run ReWire with Windows, given that the main company behind it isn't supporting it, there's no incentive for cross-platform programs to support it. Bummer.

Yeah, Rewire was a brilliant innovation from Props. Not only could I go deep using individual instruments, synths, effects right through Reason's patchbay into Studio One. I could select any Reason parameter by clicking on it, and via Rewire, Studio One's Control Link saw that parameter. Automation was just a click and drag away. Everything synced and everything automated. You could even bypass the mains. Perfect way for DAW's to play nice together.

I guess, once Reason Rack was realeased, it sort of wore the Rewire suit, so to speak. All I know is I miss that very nice inter accessibility.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. As you say Craig, it would have been great if Rewire was open source.
Sorry, now I'm venting. 😆

This is just a stupid workaround if anyone needs it.

As of late January, Apple has done something to the App Store which won’t allow users of 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14 to see the update or previous purchase buttons. As a result, I couldn’t download Logic Pro on my sampler computer. Looked around the forums and tried to get a grasp on what was happening, but couldn’t figure it out. Then I had an idea.

I have an old 2005 Mac Mini in a closet that I loan out to young bands to make demos with. It runs 10.10. I fired up the App Store and all the buttons were there! I downloaded Logic to that computer. Then I used migration assistant and installed it on the 10.13 computer. And it works like a charm!

It’s an annoying workaround, but it’s a 10 year old operating system so what are you gonna do?

Hope this helps someone!

hey, anyone considering synching Logic with Studio One, check out Time Code Expert, I have used it for larger theatre setups with video, it‘s very straightforward:

That's awesome. Thank you!
