External Hardware Thread

I'm not on Gearspace or Tapeop anymore but I love seeing the posts of people's setups and favorite external hardware. Wanna post some pics of your favorite hardware for me to gaze at? I love finding out about new pieces and weird stuff that the plugin world has forgotten about. Heck I love seeing Alesis 3630s. Let's see what you love!

I know this isn't like, a super rare piece but I finally got one of these this summer and I am in *LOVE* with it. Logic just released a plugin variation of it but I spent time with it this weekend and came away wholly convinced that while the plugin is *very* good, for some reason the hardware feels cleaner and more open. I could be wrong. Either way, this thing is so cool and fun.

Post 'em if you got 'em!

For me personally external hardware mainly means keyboards & synthesizers.

One of my favorites is the Moog Sub 37...

(My Sub 37 in action - the video is 10 years old.)

Oh heck yes. That is so beautiful. And 1:50 in that video sounds awesome.

Currently there is no single device I would like to have to mix music. As Lukas already said, I am more into instruments or synthesizers. And I could buy a new one all day long. :D All I need is a big screen, and some big synthesizers.

Oh that is so beautiful Ari. What a gorgeous setup. Do you have a favorite synth?

I gotta say, this is one of the coolest reverbs I’ve ever used. It is a fantastic studio reverb and so easy to use and automate. Chase Bliss CXM1978. IMG_1581.jpeg

Holy cow man that entire AC15 pic is gorgeous.

What mixer is that, Ari?

It should be this one. Not sure. :D

I really didn't like how plugin de-essers were making voices sound and I desperately missed my old DBX 263x. Saw one of these for $50 locally and grabbed it and now it's all I use. Fantastic little piece of equipment IMG_2692.jpg

Holy crap Jermusic. Show us some closeups of that rack. Absolutely gorgeous. I wanna know more about the VU meters next to your screen. Is that a Yamaha 01r I see? Those things are incredible.

I use two mixers to mix all the synths that sit on two rack units. The left one is a half rack size which is good for a mixer on top. 5 rack mounted synths live in there. Two big sampler workstations and 3 rack synths. Also in this rack are audio interfaces, effects, midi interfaces, Emulator CD ROM drive also. The right rack is only quarter size and sits on top of a computer enclosure. That is my old Win 7 machine and the hard and SSD drive enclosure for the Mac Studio. The smaller right rack houses DAT, CD and cassette machines plus a power amp for the small mono speakers around the room. Right under that is a noise reduction unit (downward expander) that cleans up the K2000. Also is a CD ROM drive for the Kurzweil K2000. I have close to 1000 CD ROMS which cover four big libraries. Kurzweil, EMU, AKAI and Roland. Both the EMU and K2000 also read Akai and Roland CD libraries which is rather excellent and only triples the size of the available sounds to either workstation. I have a lot hardware in a way and both the Win 7 machine and my iMac also can be triggered as synths too. I have 14 hardware devices that can be sequenced. They do all sound great for sure. It's the blend of hardware and software instruments for me that makes for some very nice textures.

Over in a corner that you cant see I have removed the doors off a wardrobe and I have a collection of various pedals and mixers etc. Korg Wavedrum up top and that big case down the bottom has the CD ROMS in it. Up top is my test gear and ADAT etc..That Teac Model 2A mixer down the bottom adds a real lovely 70's mid fi sound to anything I care to patch through it. Software often benefits from this a lot actually.
