Hi,

Is there any reason not to use .dawproject a my default format for Studio One? What are the limitations (forgetting about exchange with other DAWs - strictly speaking within S1 for save/recall).

IMO, the safest and most efficient way to save is native. If you decide to export for use in a different DAW you can always do a save..as as needed

Besides the „young“ (and maybe immature) file format, those kinds of interchangeable file formats usually suffer from compromises and incomplete feature content. This is not meant to speak down the efforts and the attempt. But if you want to be sure to have all the little details of your song stored accurately, then go native. As BobF said: you can create an extra .dawproject file anytime you need.

I tried saving as dawproject and then opening it back up in Studio One and it failed.

That should be the bare minimum of functionality.

Yes, endless reasons 😉 .dawproject is an exchange format. It does not support any of Studio One's custom features so you would lose a lot of details and editing capabilities - too many to enumerate.
