Connect iPad to Studio One 6

Hi,

I´m looking for a solution to connect my iPad to Studio One. I want to use the iPad as an external device on which I play instrument apps with a midi keyboard and record audio in Studio One.
I thought I had a solution for that some months ago. But now I can`t remember.
I can add a new device in the settings; Apple iPad is also available here. But after that I can't go any further. When "receive from" or "send to" only my other midi devices are visible.

It depends on your OS. I don’t know if it works with Windows at all. On Mac you must enable the iPad as device in the Audio-Midi-Setup. I’m currently away from my system, so this is the only hint I can give right now. And a bonus hint: if you have a dimmed tile for the iPad already visible in your Audio setup, it’s a good idea to remove it first (before plugging the iPad) and start from scratch.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm using a Mac Mini M1 with Sonoma.
We are on the right track.
I knew it wasn't difficult.
Now: Midi is being sent and received but I have no sound. I have an instrument (Midi) track and an audio track in Studio One, both with iPad input. The settings in the Audio Midi app don't seem to be quite right. It seems strange to me that under primary stream the channel volume is at zero and cannot be changed. I have attached a picture.

Yes, that’s the right direction. But as I said: I cannot check, because I’m on holiday vacation. Maybe Monday or Tuesday I will be back on my computer and can give it a try myself. I managed it to work just a couple of weeks ago.

I could be way off base on what you are trying to do but, sometime back I wanted to play a Instrument on my IPad and get it recorded into Studio One. Long story short is for my situation I needed a Roland UM-1 to connect the audio. Sure enough this worked.

If this is NOT what you need I certainly am Interested to see what happens and how it works out so please do post your solution :)

Hi again,
that was an easy one:
I thought that the Audio Midi app would also transmit audio directly without additional cables.
In the audio track created in Studio One, iPad 1/2 was also shown as an input.
I also thought that connecting the iPad's headphone output to my audio device wouldn't help, since there was no sound through the speakers either: obviously wrong. After I connected the headphone output of the iPad to the audio device with a Y cable, everything worked perfectly.
I'm just wondering if the whole thing would also work with my iPad 12.9, which only has a USB-C output for charging OR connecting a headphone adapter.
But first of all, it doesn't matter: this is how everything works very simply.

I hadn't thought about the audio MIDI app at first.
Thanks!

Great that it works for you. But what you wrote is exactly how it should work: Midi and Audio via USB cable! No extra audio connection necessary.

Ok, I managed to revisit this setup again. First of all: your iPad Audio is fine (your screenshot) - no need to have enabled sliders for volume.

In Studio One you have to setup a new external device first:

And here comes the twist: You must EITHER create an "aggregated" virtual new audio device in macOS (aggregated = you combine several audio interfaces to a single new device, but at the cost of higher latency), OR you set the Recording Device of your audio setup to the iPad and leave the Playback to your standard interface. I did the latter as shown in the screenshot below.

Now drag the newly created external device to the arrange window.

Open the device window and add an AUX channel to it

And finally, select for the AUX channel the "Input 1 + 2" as input device (since you have selected the iPad as Recording Input, these are the only available channels anyway.

And that's it. Basically, these are the same steps as for other external synthesizers, except for selecting the iPad aus "Audio Interface" for recording.

Thanks for the illustrations, I've somehow lost my Aux Channel for my external workstation so that'll save a bunch of research time!
