Solved Audio Track Won't Play

OneBass

New member
Hello, I’m a newbie here, first post.

I have an annoying problem. Out of the blue an audio track will fail to play. Other tracks in my project will play fine and the play head cursor will move forward but no sound is produced for the track in question. The track is not muted and does not contain any layers and this problem is sporadic, it may happen every 2 or 3 weeks.

I’ve tried duplicating the problematic track from within Studio One and also copying the audio to a new audio track to no avail. I’ve re-started Studio One and even rebooted my machine; but the problem persists. I have no problem with other tracks in my project and no problem with my interface as I can play audio files with a media player and also play YouTube vids with no problem. The problem is contained to Studio One, the project I’m working on and the specific problematic audio track.

As a “solution” I can drag in the same audio file (onto a new track) and the problem goes away; the audio plays fine.

I’m running Studio One Pro 7.02 on a Windows machine and have had this issue before. I’m guessing a setting for the problematic track somehow got flipped but I can’t figure out how or what got flipped.

Any help to understand this problem is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.
Apparently the factory Dropout Protection setting is "High" and I've never changed it.
I then tried, Medium, Low, Minimum and Off and the problem still persists.
I made these changes at Studio One>Options>Audio Setup

What operating system version and audio interface are you running?

Please update your signature (see link and example in mine) as that helps members when responding to questions.

Hmmm, this is interesting; I had not seen this before.
I understand that the sampling rates in Studio One and my interface are the same at 44.1 kHz.
Is this what you mean?

Don't forget to select your Tascam 208i audio interface in the dropdown list...

Trucky, I don't know how embarassed I should be. I completly missed what you are pointing out in my screen shot.

But here is a discovery that is more baffling. I just noticed that when I display the Studio One Audio Device Options window and then call up the Windows Snip tool to screen capture it, what then happens is that "Series 102i/208i" in the Audio Device field instantly changes to "No Audio Device". Then upon closing the Snip tool without snipping anything, the audio device setting remains latched at "No Audio Device". And if I were to snip it, as I did above, it captures the "No Audio Device" setting.

This is absolutely baffling. Is this a Snip tool problem, a Windows problem or a Studio One problem?
Hopefully someone else on Win 11 and ver 7.02 can confirm this.

One thing is for sure, the "original" problematic audio track (track 1) will not play (with the audio device set to "Series 102i/208i" But when I drag in the identical MP3 audio file (track 2) it does play.

I have StudioOne 7.02 and Win11, both which seem to work well with other. Using the snipping tool, I can get a screen shot of the SO audio options window and it does not change block sizes or change the setting to no device. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Try reinstalling the ASIO driver for your Tascam 208i audio interface and confirm that it works with Studio One and Windows 11. If it's set to 24 bit, 44,100 Hz make sure that the properties match for all the audio devices defined in Windows. I also recommend disabling "Exclusive" mode (see screenshot example) for the audio devices listed in Playback and Recording tabs.

If you still have issues, I'd recommend contacting Tascam support.

Thanks Trucky,
I noticed that I had 2 pending cumulative Win 11 updates so I installed them . . . no difference.
I then uninstalled Snip and re-installed it . . . again no difference.
Obviously I've got some baffling issues going on in my system that are expressing themselves in Studio One and the Snip tool.

I'll give your ideas a try.

Is there by any chance some processing going on on that track, like time stretching/audio bend, or Melodyne or something? And do I understand correctly that this track sometimes does play and other times not?

Trucky, I'm a little hesitant to directly reinstall the Tascam driver for fear of making things even worse. I think I'll save that for a last resort after talking to the Tascam people. But I did verify that Exclusive Mode is disabled. I also clicked the "Check for driver updates" (see screen shot) and it resulted in saying that I'm all up to date. But it's not clear to me if Windows is smart enough to go to the Tascam site and actually compare driver versions for the interface. I could be wrong but I'm thinking that it is only looking at/for Microsoft drivers.

Dave71, I see your post and will prepare a reply.

I notice you have release audio in the background checked, SO 1 has lost focus, un check the box in your audio settings.

Your driver will remain visible afterward.

Best regards.

Dave, let me pull the camera back and explain where I’m trying to go on this project. My goal is to separate the bass from an MP3 file and then produce a tablature of the bass line so I can learn to play it better than just relying on my ears to figure it out. The source audio is a classic song by the Fortunes.

The Fortunes - You've Got Your Troubles, I've Got Mine

I’ve been waiting for years for an application to have this capability. From what I understand, Studio One should be able to do this. If so, the Presonus programmers deserve big kudos for pulling this off as this would be a great piece of audio engineering.

But along the way I got derailed first by the muted track problem and then by the “mind of its own” snip tool.

In the process of preparing this screen shot I notice a small “No Speaker” icon on the problematic track. I certainly didn’t intentionally put it there, I’m not even sure how it got there. Could this be the root of the mute problem? I’ve looked at the various track options and don’t see how to get rid of it.

Likewise on my bass recording I see a small gear icon, yet there is no such icon on my click track. My bass track and the click play with no problem. Do you know what this is telling me?

Like they say... "A picture is worth a thousand words"...

Yes, the "No Speaker" icon signifies that the event is muted.
Click to select the event followed by pressing [Shift] M to unmute it.

Did you use the "Separate Stems" function to create your Bass track?
If so, by default it mutes the original track.

I think you solved one of my problems. I unchecked that box and now the snip tool doesn't change my audio device anymore. Many thanks.
I can't remember why I checked that in the first place, probably in connection with some other problem

Upon further investigations I discovered that no less than 7 of my drivers were outdated and so I've updated them.

You guys are good, another homerun, many thanks.
[shift]M solved that problem, I was aware of muting and unmuting a track but not an event and I'm not even sure how that got muted. Maybe I should stop typing with my elbows :)

I didn't separate any stems to create the bass track. I created a new track, armed it, and played my bass to record it directly into S1 via channel 1 of the Tascam.

I think I can call this problem solved. Can someone show me how to mark it as solved?
